H.A.R.P.A. - HomeBrew Advanced Research Projects Assessment

HomeBrew Advanced Research Projects Assessment

Ok, Guys n' Gals, this one is a bit off the wall, but kind'a bear with me for a few....

This is going to be a thread devoted to really cool Real World technologies that catch people's eyes and would make damnably way-cool tech on our model boats! think of it as a 'Special Projects' assignment board where one or a bunch of us can grab a piece of tech posted here and start a project thread about trying (hopefully succeeding) to adapt to model boats.

Think of this as where we drop the intellectual teasers and nudges to bring the pot to a nice rolling boil.

This thread will be for posting the tech 'assignment' proposals - not for the builds. We will make sure to link to the builds that happen rest assured. Know a cool piece of R/L tech that's fit - please post it here.

So let's start by kicking things off with Umi's ASD Schottel mixer project as HARPA 0001.

HARPA Project 0002 - [/COLOR]Dual Steering with Integrated Throttles . . . Development Thread Available

HARPA Project 0001 - ASD Schottel mixer (Origionally posted by Umi)

Essentially an ESC, and Rudder mixer where the initial movement of
the joystick will direct the steering, via stepper motor, and any increase in
the throw will apply throttle. This creates 360° steering and throttle by
mixing the two channels of any single joystick.

Simple two channel stick movement including steering and throttle mix.

Check out the footage of the controls of the USNS Spearhead between 00:32 and 00:45 - Now that would be cool on a radio for certain ships, a lot better than dual sticks. Think we can make it happen for Pat Mat? If so, start a HARPA Project thread!

That's exactly what I am working on right now. Slowly but surely!

Cheers,

I'm working on CAD drawings of a control head that will drop over standard joy sticks and make it so you have throttle in the center and steering in the rotation of the head. Head will be able to rotate 360 degree continues with no wires to tangle.

Will post some rendering of the control when I get it done

HARPA Project 0003: Super VecTwin system

Here is another steering system I saw a while back here on RC Groups. It was originally posted by Tregurtha1013 who was assigned to a tug with the system (see here). It uses twin Schilling® Rudders. I think this would be a pretty cool system for any boat, but also it presents a great opportunity for a cool Transmitter Hack!

Check out the steerage simulator below to see this system in action!

Google Seach: VecTwin . . . Google Image Search: Vec Twin

That's exactly what I want to build for my Well Enhancer and Seven Atlantic.
Looks cool doesn't it?

Greetings Josse
