Question
Wingtip staling

How do you prevent wingtip staling on the Spirit 2 meter sailplane? I heard that you can put 1/32 balsa sheeting on the wingtips but i don't know if that will work.

The easiest solution: don't fly slow and turn!

The Charles River site has some great setup tips for the Spirit.

I maidened one for a guy and I thought it flew great. It flew noticeably faster than a Gentle Lady, and retained energy pretty well. I was able to core a thermal up well above the launch height from a high start.

My advice? Fly it faster, and try to be aware of how tight it will circle, and where the point of diminishing returns is.

Fun plane- I wouldn't mind picking a kit version of one.

if its a built up wing , twist the tip at the rear up and shrink the covering , also can sand a blunter radius on the leading edge at the tip ...

How do you know just the tip stalled? If flying slowly while turning its very likely the entire inside wing stalled, especially if adequate washout.

Dive test will do nothing to prevent this, and is unrelated to the angle of attack. Flying a little faster will probably go a long way to solving your problem.

The Spirit is well known for havign tip stall issues caused by a combination of covering sag forward of the spar in the tips, too much incidence, and shifty washout.

The Charles River article linked above goes in to each problem and possible soutions in depth.

Adding about 1/4" - 3/8" washout did wonders for my Spirit in reducing tipstalls. Keeping the speed up helps too. That bird like to be flown fast in thermal turns and landing approaches.

The sheeting doesn't do much. Washout is much more effective. It needs a lot.

It may help to make the fin a bit larger, too. It's undersized, and that means it gets wiggly when you slow down. But of course, make sure you have some washout first, the same on both sides.

If I had one, I'd probably leave the fin the same size and make the fuselage a bit longer instead. But if I did that, I might have to rebuild the tail surfaces lighter to avoid having to put in too much nose weight. At some point I'd probably give up and build a Chrysalis or something.

I had a fair amont of washout and no sheeting on mine and it worked pretty well.

Correcting Tip Stall in a 2M Spirit

Although I didn't mention it in this old exchange, the tip stall was afflicting my 2M Spirit. The correction, which worked immediately, was graciously provided by Mark Drela of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

One other thing to consider is that every turn in a R/E controlled plane begins with a skid. The combination of a high aspect ratio planform and slow speeds, makes skidding turns just about the most risky maneuver performed at low level.
