Need a GOOD cheap esc combo for savage xs tired of fooling with the stock esc

Any suggestions I feel like thousands of people have been through this with the savage already and could probably help me pretty quick

I have a Castle Creations brand I really like it. I have had good luck with Novak, Tekin and LRP I have never used the stuff from Hobby king I like to recommend what I run now or have in the past. I guess I forgot to ask do you want a brushless set up or a Brushed set up I think that truck is a brushed motor

Not sure if it's suitable for the Savage, but I'm very pleased with the LRP ESC I have in my Lazer ZX-5. Excellent control due to being sensored, and has excellent built in protection against overheating etc.

I just installed a traxxas velineon vxl3m Keeps getting hot. Not sure what the problem is but it heats up quick with little use. Feel like I may have done something wrong here! New to this stuff. Thought the esc lloked small out of the box. Any tips, think I may have waste some money here.

I have no fan on at the moment but it still seems to be producing too much heat. Don't think the fan will make that much of a difference will it?

Improper gearing, something in the drivetrain causing excessive drag.

Well I was thinking gearing but it seems to heat up in too short of a time and at slow speeds to be that I think. Maybe it will be fine with the fan installed, maybe that will make a bigger difference then I think it will?

Still on the stock motor/gearing? I would make sure there's no excessive drag in the driveline, and also check out the motor. If you keep burning up ESC's it's likely the motor or driveline.

Maybe its the motor, how do you tell if one of these motors is bad? Stock motor by the way. It's an early model too so I dont have a whole lot of confidence in it. Esc went really quick. Still not sure if this traxxas esc is compatible with the motor, I read somewhere that they do not work good on four pole motors. Ned to do more research next time so I dont blow my whole paycheck! Really want to get this thing going though. Still having fun.

Well I removed the motor and ran it on its own for a while. ESC ran cool but the motor would start hitching towards full throttle was not running at full performance? Driveline is smooth without the motor opened up and checked both diff cases. Re installed the motor and still overheating speed control. Either the motor or the ESC just cant handle it. Using 5000mah nimh batt. Don't dare try my 2s lipo. I think I might have just introduced myself to ESC's the hard way. Any thoughts welcome.
