My 2012 FPV year in Review
My annual Best Of video disappeared in a virtual blizzard of other good FPV vids posted a
few weeks ago and I figured it deserved a little highlighting. Also tired of "Quick Tricopter

Anyway, figured I'd also mention a few notable highlights from 2012 many of which are featured in the video.
Started year off with new X8 from BEVRC. Large, fast, efficient, occasionally tricky to launch.
Can get into a spin if you slow down too much and any autopilot will perpetuate it to the
ground. Did some exhaustive spin testing and developed a proven recovery technique.
It's a cruiser, and people love the way it looks in the sky. Got into low hanging clouds with
it a couple times in the spring, and out nearly 7 miles in Montana.
Tested a popular antenna tracker. Found GPS sometimes very slow to initialize so
using the tracker slowed down my normal pre-flight routine by several minutes. Occasionally
freaked out for no apparent reason causing it to spin around, point the wrong direction,
leaving me with no A/V and thus no way for it to receive telemetry to correct itself. My CP
omni setup reaches out almost 3 miles so generally just don't need the tracker and don't
currently use it. It's cool when it works, but I just put my Crosshair on a tripod and aim
it manually when I want to go 5+ miles.
Had fun at the 2nd annual Colorado FPV meet near Hartsel plus several mini-meets
throughout the year.
My crashable Tricopter evolved a few times during 2012 (see previous blog entries).
Got a bit lighter, tried a couple different controllers and finally got my hands on an
Openpilot CC3D controller which really put the performance of this floppy frame into a
new realm. Lots of fun going fast, low, at night, doing front and back flips, and up to
a quadruple roll.
Spent 6 weeks or so in Montana mostly flying the X8 and Tricopter, then finally got
the Skywalker out and remembered why it's so fun to fly it low. It's nimble and
totally predictable while dodging trees, deer, water, etc.. Did a live broadcast on
justin.tv every day or two for a couple weeks. Did a 13.5 mile cross country flight
flown from the passenger seat of my truck driving a parallel course.
Picked up a Hero3 Black in the fall and had some fun with slow-mo,
night flying (great low light performance for an HD camera) and
generally really nice looking footage. Software/firmware, maybe hardware
is a bit flaky though.
Put together a new Skyhunter from FPVmodels. Falls somewhere in the middle
between Skywalker and X8 in terms of performance. Bit more stable on both
roll and yaw axes due to straight wing and twin verticals. More stable
than the X8 on pitch axis and easy to mount GoPro on pan servo, as it is on the Skywalker.
Another plane that's fun to fly low. Major pain to setup and break down
in the field.
Ended the year pushing the Abominable Tricopter and Skyhunter to their limits
and occasionally beyond.
Gave rides under my passenger goggles to dozens of strangers, friends and
family all throughout the year.
For 2013, may build myself an "H-virus quad" and put my FPV gear on one of my
big 3+m composite sailplanes, as I've been missing the FPV soaring that
got me started almost 5 years ago.

Yes please to your soaring videos! Used to love your slope videos! Power is always fun but the slope is pure and a challenge! Get that spark back!

the most dynamic range or produce the most saturated colors, but it biases exposure
toward the bottom of the frame, so the ground is always visible even in difficult (overcast,
or after sunset) lighting conditions.
