My current project is to fit a gas engine into a nitro-based model helicopter.

Cooling may be the biggest issue to solve, since the gas engine will produce more heat than its nitro equivalent. Modifying the existing crank driven fan and shroud is unlikely to provide the airflow required to keep temps in check.

Fitting one or two small EDF units may be a solution to the problem. They will move a lot of air and since new sideframes will be needed anyway, mounting points can be made to suit the direction of required air flow.

I'm looking for recommendations for a 30mm and 40mm EDF unit. I'm chasing air movement and low current draw. A brushless set-up is preferred by not essential. Quality units that I can trust to operate reliably is important.

Keen to get any recommendations.

this is a very good unit, 30mm, low amp draw and plenty of flow

comes with all the screws for assembly, goes together in a couple minutes, will go several minutes on a 3s 250mah pack, a 3s 500mah pack should get you 6-7 minutes, more if you only need less than the equivalent of full throttle, and its fairly lite.

by coincidence I just did a quick test of my old GWS 40mm edf with hyperion 5800kv 12mm motor. Inside the airframe (Jpower 50mm AMX), with a half-empty 500mah zippy compact, it produces 170g static thrust in airframe at 7.5A 11.2V

hmmm...I thought the HK units were 35mm, but they may still work.

That is the ELERC A-10. The foam in the nacelles is rather thick, it originally was made to use the AEO 30mm fans. The foam can be sanded to accept the JPower 35mm fans, 40mm would be pushing it. If it did fit, the foam would be getting pretty thin at that point and motor/ fan weight is increasing as well. There is a noticeable increase in weight moving up to a 12mm in runner. This bird benefits from lighter weight so in a sense, 40mm is going the wrong way. Just my humble opinion.
