Painting a Sterling Balsa Wood model Chris Craft boat

Hi everyone,

Have some questions regarding painting my Sterling Chris Craft 50' Catalina Flying Bridge. What type of paint do I use? Do I seal it first with dope? Or is the color paint dope? I want to paint it white with the light blue on the top, does anyone know what the actual tone of white and blue are called? What type of clear varnish or lacquer do I use on the Mahogany parts? Should I clear the mahogany pieces before I glue them?

Hi Jeff, looks like quite a bit of construction ahead for you before many of the answers to these questions are meaningful..

Have you started the model ? ( all we see is the box ) ...

Hi Jeff2010,

You will probably need to fiberglass the hull in order to give it proper strength. Here is a link to a thread that explains the whole process:

http://www.rcgroups.com/forums/showthread.php?t=329811

And this thread is a great resource for all construction techniques. It has links to differnt thread based on topic.

Also, you should start a thread for your boat build, this way you can ask any questions as you go, and post pictures to help explain what you are dealing with. The members here love to see pix and follow along.

Regards,
Pete

I have punched out all the pieces. One of the templates was missing so I had to fabricate 5 pieces myself. This is my first attempt at build a model out of balsa. I plan to start assembling next weekend.

Welcome Jeff!

Can you even get model airplane dope anymore?

What a lot of us use now is thinned epoxy.

And, there is an excellent new tutorial just put out by the AMA on fiberglassing as well:

Oh dear, resin and cyano with everything.

Basically a hard chine hull Jeff2010, heavyweight tissue and doping should be fine for the hull. P/M your e-mail and I'll forward the words and music from this side of the pond of how to do it.

Aliphatic resin (white) glue for the wood construction.

Regards Ian.

Nitrate dope is used as a wood sealer and also as an adhesive for attaching materials such as silkspan.

Check out some of Pat Tritle's builds. He uses it often.

So still waiting on a response for the painting process. I need to know best way to varnish or clear mahogany pieces and sealing the balsa wood pieces. This will be a display model. No water.
