Hehe, you should see the other project I started earlier. I'm working the plans up for a KK Falcon. Even have some balsa mangled for it. These two beauties are my "warm up" practices for starting the Falcon in earnest.

Day 4 -- Progress Report

Photo 1 shows what "multi-tasking" is about -- The stabilizer plan on the board, and the Envoy just off to the left.

Notice the epoxy bottles. I had not used these in some time, and I'd forgotten how good the smell was...

A man after my own heart - start with the tailplane, gives you that "1/3rd finished" glow!

Day 5 -- Tailplane Progress (Page 3)

Photo 1 shows the tailplane under construction. I'm following Smeed's 'split the middle' leading edge method. It wasn't all that difficult.

Sanding will bring the outline back into shape after the unit is finished. The ribs have to be cut into two sections (fore and aft) around the double rear spar. I also have to notch the bottoms of the spars to fit over the tip pieces. I like to build the tailplane as a one-piece unit first, then cut away the elevator. Keeps things aligned...

Day 6 -- Tailplane Progress

Photo 1 -- Added the ribs to the frame, reinforced the glue on a few joints last night. The rudder is being used as a spacer for the two added ribs.

That's looking like a fine set of tail feathers but please tell me where I can buy those lovely T-bar pins.

DuBro Large (1 1/2") T-Pins

If your local hobby shop carries the DuBro line, they should have these or should be able to get them. They come in bags of 100 and are indispensable.

ADDENDUM: There are three sizes. I prefer the large ones, but there is a 1 1/4" and a 1", with smaller diameters.

Thanks CP, Found them on E-bay UK. Couldn't find a UK model shop that stocked them. Now the Colonel will tell me that there's dozens of 'em oop North!

Day 6 -- Tailplane Progress

Photo 1 -- The tailplane has been removed from the board, and last-minute glue joints are being reinforced. A good sanding is in order...

The center section will receive a covering of 1/16" sheet balsa, with the center gap exposed for the rudder to fit into,,,

Day 8 -- Fiddly Bits

Not much done tonight, no photos. Managed to get the rudder fin drilled for Robart hinge points. Will have to reinforce the balsa somehow around those locations to prevent breakage.

Must be quite tricky getting hinge points into surfaces as thin as this. I tend to use mylar hinges pegged with cocktail sticks for these thin surfaces, they work well down to as thin as 3/32".
