Freedom Of Press Index 2013

Quote:
The same three European countries that headed the index last year hold the top three positions again this year. For the third year running, Finland has distinguished itself as the country that most respects media freedom. It is followed by the Netherlands and Norway. Although many criteria are considered, ranging from legislation to violence against journalists, democratic countries occupy the top of the index while dictatorial countries occupy the last three positions. Again it is the same three as last year – Turkmenistan, North Korea and Eritrea.
Out of the 179 countries which most LTUP posters live in, in comparison to last years rankings:

Canada drops 10 places to 20th.
UK drops 1 place to 29th
US rises 15 places to 32nd
Israel drops 20 places to 129th

The biggest mover is Mali, which drops 74 places to 99th.

In 2010, the UK was at #19.

Obviously a wild survey.

Why does that mean it's a wild survey?

The numbers vary widely from year to year for many countries.

That means that no one should take a single year's results as even remotely indicative of anything.

Statistics, everyone thinks they know what they are, but almost everyone misuses them.

Yet for other countries, they remain the same.

The fact that they do vary ''wildly'' for some countries, could just as easily be an indication of how close some countries are to each other, in that it doesn't take much for them to move a few places.

I am surprised the US is in as high a place as it is with all the media corruption we have.

When the US., the UK and Canada, vary widely, that should be a clue.

Proving that such a ranking is meaningless.

A clue of how close they are to each other in this respect?

What do you think are the chances of North Korea coming in first place next year?

When some of their press members get to vote, it will be a much better chance, I think.

It isn't down to a vote.

How many places does a ''range'' consist of?

Yes it is. At least understand what you are using as a reference.

It's a vote by those "authorized" to answer the questionnaire. Totally subjective.

And a ballot looks exactly like a multiple choice questionnaire, doesn't it?
