For sure. We were expecting bad storms and winds yesterday-- almost 70*F the day before and a frontal system with 30*F behind it coming through in the early hours. That squall line looked bad coming through Mississippi (to our west) but fortunately fell apart and weakened in the western part of Alabama, redeveloping and strengthening to the east and into Georgia. And the week before it was threats of an ice storm.

Be glad that British weather is sooo boring...

Yeah, we've been smelling that nasty Southern air for a day or so now.
It's hot, it's humid, and it smells like pollen.

I sure do miss that nice, clean, crisp, arctic air that comes down from Canada... it's cool alright!

How is the earthquake warning system working out there?

Well it rolled through here last night. Fortunately I live on the extreme southern end of it. Though not far from Georgia.

Anyhow before the squall line rolled through it got really windy, I'm guessing 20-40 knots with some blusters even higher. Nothing fell and I thanked mother nature for her kindness and her foresight with the pruning for Hurricane season.

Oh the squall line lasted all of an hour, barely an inch of rain.

That storm caused a lot of people a lot of grief. I think that it's through the Carolinas and maybe to Virginia now. Another wave is thrashing Tennessee with snow.

Here is a screengrab of an Intellicast animation of the Doppler radar (Greenwood Spgs, MS) for early yesterday AM ~1300Z. You can see where the storm fell apart in the upper half, but stayed strong and developed in the lower half. This lower portion strengthened as it moved across Ala and into Georgia. The broad, green shield behind the squall made for light, steady rain all the next day.

Quiet weather for a few days, just C O L D (20's)...

I thought that the 70 to 80 mile per hour wind gusts that we had around here, were enough.

Didn't see that other storm coming.

Wednesday ,we had near constant and heavy rains...the river surrounding my property crested about midnight and flooded several acres ,though the house was never in any danger...

Yesterday the river subsided somewhat to a foot or so below its banks and remained at that level most of the day ,but the temps dropped into the mid 30's and we experienced heavy snowfall intermittently thru out the day though there was no significant accumalation,appx 4 pm or so the clouds broke up and the sun graced us with its precense til sundown ....

awoke to 6 inches of snow on top of ice a little bit ago,roads are closed thruout the county according to local radio station ,...I believe it ...the hwy ,paralleling the river is usually moderately heavy with commuter traffic this time of morning ...I haven't seen or heard a single vehicle yet....the hwy is several feet above the river and my property ,so flooding over the roadway is doubtful ,though there may have been significat run-off from the many mountainside cliffs above the roadway..

clear skies and sun predicted for tomorrow ...looking forward to more flooding ...

I don't think the second storm in TN is as bad-- I just saw an arc of rain in the valley and snow in the hills and thought the worst. The Smokies and Carolinas have had problems with roads washing out from all the rain. Not enough for super-flooding, but steady, repeated rain saturates the soil and especially road fill areas and causes a slump, "slope failure".

Saturated soil from gentle rains or snowfall is a killer. A moderate rainfall doesn't infiltrate the soil, it goes mainly into runoff which causes flooding. And tree roots don't hold as well in saturated soils and high winds can easily topple those trees.

We'll see what Mother Nature serves up for us... we'll mostly survive.
