Brodak 40 has a pretty good break .. though some report they couldn't get the run right while others have very good luck.

The Enya 09-IV will (not sure about the earlier marks but don't see why they wouldn't). Also the Enya 45-I.

Super Tigre G21 46 and V60 are great 4-2-4 engines.
OS FP 15's, 40's and 46's are high rpm/lowpitch prop engines. So are FSR's.
I've run Foxes both ways, 4-2-4 and high R's.
McCoy 19's, 35's are 4-2-4, Stallion 35, Veco 19, 45, Torp 45, etc are too.
Any newer stuff I had are all piped PA's.

Oh yea, don't forget the modern engines like the PAs if you can still find one. They have a wonderful break too though to me not as much as say a ST V60 but still a very nice break.

Randy isn't going to keep working with the cases that Henry had supplied, now that Henry sold the business?

He's still showing the 40, 51, 61, 65, and 75 sizes, and the engines still look like they started out from the Nelson production line.

Don't forget the RoJET engines. I run PA and RoJET.

Most motors will 424. Some motors have a soft 424 some have a hard 424. That depends on the motor timing. Even then I had a 60 size 424 harder on muffler then the same motor had a softer 424 on pipe. Also I had a Norvel .049 doing 424.
Maybe the question should be how to make a motor run properly. I f you get a motor out of the box and expect it to 424 right away and you get it the first time then you are in one of the two categories: One the Very lucky category or two the one that has a similar plane to someone else and you copied his setup.

I thought all the PAs were gone. Maybe I'm wrong. I don't have deep enough pockets for one right now so I've not kept up lol.

Agree with the "most" statement. With proper plug, prop, venturi, needle setting, fuel, etc most can be made to break. I get a soft break out of my perfectly timed Tower 40 in my Vector 40 running 10/22 fuel and an APC 11.5/4.5 prop on unifo. It is super consistent and does break though not near as pronounced as say a Fox 35 but some planes don't need as much break either. The Vector 40 seems that way, it seems to fly the same speed regardless of engine run and which way the pointed end is pointed. I think it also helps that I hang it out there almost 70' and fly her a bit faster than my other planes. To me it does better corners with just a tad more speed.

Here's my 4-2-4 engine, a Testors Series 21 McCoy .40 Black Head. Been testing it by retrofitting a lightweight YS muffler to cut the bark for in-city flying. Today's runs proved it runs fine without overheating.

Here is my other 4-2-4 engine, a Testors McCoy .19 Red Head. I turned a sow's ear into a silk purse by converting a dysfunctional Tatone .09-.19 Calumet EM-4 muffler into a tongue muffer.

The LA46 runs a nice break, similar to a ST46 but not quite as good. Since the ST46 is harder to come by and much more expensive these days, the LA 46 is used by a few here as a good substitute. They run nice with an 11x5

The LA40 on the other hand are cows to work with and will run away, unless they are modified and even then are best steered clear of.

A run away motor is one clear sign of a motor that has insufficient load on it. Put a prop with slightly larger diameter and it will cure this run away. If the diameter is too big the motor will stay in the 4 cycle and will not break. Like I said before most motors with proper timing will 424 if you know how to set them up. I have seen LA40 424 just fine but there are certain things that need to happen in order to achieve that.

I've run la 40s and 46s and both run about the same (we have several in fact at our field). With that said, none really do a true 424. Any motor can be made to have a slight break as Traian says but the la motors are timed to run a bit faster. Tower 40s are pretty much the same (as are FP 40s). These newer motor designs are just not designed to turn a larger prop at lower rpm. I have a Tower 40 in a VEctor 40. I run 10/22 fuel uniflo with APC 10.5x4.5. It has a slight break only but this is just fine on the Vector. Kind of the same run that Brett has described for the FP20 I believe. Nothing wrong with it .. just different. With this said, none of these are gonna break like say a Fox 35 or V60 without changing a few things like timing, at least in my humble opinion.
