(Especially as there is no such thing as 'safe' - it's a myth!) And there is "some chance" that a lorry could drive into my house (the road is a few feet in front of my house), or of an electrical fire, a gas explosion, a plane crashing into it (I'm under the flight path of the local International airport), the ceiling collapsing on us or ....

I give 99% of them no thought.

P.S. I also don't have a fire extinguisher and not had one for around 40 years - as mentioned in a discussion before. And never carried one in the car, either.
Well, I have several extinguishers in the house and one in each car. I also keep first aid kits around. I have deadbolts, smoke alarms and and alarm system. And yes, I keep arms. My gal knows how to use them but doesn't carry. She is, however, taking kung fu and swi jou (sp?). I believe every women should have self defense training at least.

You sound like someone who never had a violent encounter and I'm glad. Not all have been so lucky; for instance, some nut tried to strangle my mom in a lady's bathroom many years ago. She got away unharmed and luckily the fool was caught. Things like that tend to raise your awareness.

I'm embarrassed for my, err, armed comrades, Norman. Really and truly, the "Burt Gummer" clones are a minority here, but unfortunately a very vocal minority.

My theory is that it is Tea Party-related. After the sound trounce from the recent National Election, they licked their wounds and regrouped. With the recent rsah of shootings "gun control" is a hot topic. And here we are-- gun control, Obama, socialism, "us vs them", racial issues and the whole socioeconomic gamut that we endured running up to the Elections. Same tune, different verse.

Sad.

Marginalizes gun owners, then complains about "us vs. them". Yep, sad indeed.

Different countries consider different crimes to be ''violent.'' Even Scotland and Northern Ireland each release their own sets of statistics, which aren't directly comparable to the statistics from England and Wales.

What I do know is that around half of all ''violent crimes'' in the statistics from England and Wales (where over 90% of the population of the UK lives), involve no injury to any person.

Each and every quote lists the news agency that first reported it, and the date. That's called attribution, just so you now know, but obviously didn't..

DO read what I post for a change.

No, what is 'sad,' is your seeming need to marginalize those with which you disagree.

RKBA isn't specific to Tea Party, nor is it specific to your movie reference.

Then let's say poorly attributed quotes.

Here is a Google of the atttibution-in-name-only of the first quote:

Since you possibly went to the trouble to look these up, why not include a link to the source?

Gun owners are marginal. A shrill and strident minority. The characteristics I listed are observed Teaper's echoing back through the guntoters.

In your non-expert opinion.

Why can't you do it, if you doubt the material?

1. Find the Birmingham news. http://www.google.com/search?q=The+Birmingham+News

2. Search for 63 year old woman http://search.al.com/63+year+old+woman

3. Viola!....er....Voila! there it is. http://blog.al.com/spotnews/2012/10/...ot_intrud.html

Sheesh, I should not have to teach someone how to use Google.

As for the figures, I dunno... but Wiki says that the USA was consistently higher (per 100,000 pop) than the UK until 2010, although the figures have always been close-ish.

How's your 'freedoms' with all your much vaunted 'gun-love' working out for you - and your women folk?
Quite well, considering our murders and violent crime is down in the recent years.

So,

I respond to logan5 append, in which he suggested some vague stats about the difference in US and UK rape rates, indicating that there seems to be little or no difference in the rates between the countries. In fact the US having been worse most of the time. Yet you point out instances where a gun came into the equation.

I suspect you wouldn't believe that that approach was biased, and proving little, because you wouldn't show all the others where the rapes were 'successful' and no gun intervention prevailed.

Basically, we have insignificant gun usage, whilst you have almost more guns than people - yet overall you are failing to reduce these crimes below what we have (which seems to be one of the main 'stated' reasons why you want them).

Another fallacious excuse for why guns are 'necessary', madsci!

(And yes, I'm perfectly aware that stats prove little - so why do people invent some vague ones to support an emotive argument? )
