Zimbabwe; A Lesson On What Happens When You Tax the Rich 100%

When you chase out the producers, all you have left is the "non" producers.

Quote:
The economy started to come apart at the seams in 2000, when President Robert Mugabe seized the land of over 4,000 white-owned farmers, effectively dismantling the country's agriculture industry. Over the course of the next decade, the country spiraled into an extended period of hyperinflation, the likes of which the world almost never sees.

Apart from the fact that there's no mention of tax rates, your thread title is otherwise correct.

Zimbabwe is a poster child for what happens when the rule of law is replaced by a socialist dictatorship. Anyone want to be a Zimbabwe millionaire? Just buy a few of these on E-Bay!

As I understand it, Zimbabwe is a food exporting nation with a starvation problem. Next door neighbors are new American citizens from Zimbabwe.

I believe all that seized farmland became unproductive and when the government seizes everything you own, that's pretty close to a 100% tax.

They figured whitey was the cause of all their problems and all they had to do was take everything back. I see lots of parallels to what Obama's supporters want. They cry about slavery that was legally ended ~150 years ago and think it should be some basis for policy today. Got to keep that card in play.

i know quite a few (former) farmers from zimbabwe. fortunately, most had enough invested outside the country to come out OK when the crap hit the fan.

Zimbabwe was the "bread Basket" of Southern Africa, now they have to import food, but the government has no funding for such luxuries, the farms have been given to former members of the 'liberation army' which have been left to wither and die, all the agricultural equipment that was in place has rusted away from neglect. People have resorted to poaching the wildlife for survival, which has decimated the natural fauna and flora to an alarming extent, so this once rich and beautiful African country is just a shadow of it's former self. All due to the policies of the autocratic leader, who by the way is a multi billionaire.

Exactly, and that's why my use of the word "tax" in the title was perfectly appropriate.

Only to those that can only see that any words must be made to match their single minded viewpoint.

This constant whining about tax - why don't you lot stop whining about it and either get the laws changed, stop paying it, or move somewhere else?

Its only if you believe that taxation and confiscation are the same that this would work. However, there are no ex white Zimbabwean farmers on the breadline as far as I know, so your 100% tax rate would also seem erroneous.

What makes you think I'm not trying to do something about it?

Well, tell others about your constructive actions rather than just moaning - that way others who agree with you could gain some 'benefit' (and the rest of us would get some relief from the moaning... )

I hope your efforts are far beyond just posting on an off topic forum of a Radio Control site.
