I have a turnigy 1811 2000kv that I may try for this application as part of my P-51 mod-a-thon.... I had it on a scratchbuild biplane that weighed nearly 100g and it pulled like a freight train, I think it was 1.4:1 thrust

edit: of course this is probably in the wrong place then, because it's a 2s application, so discount all the bs I just spewed

you'd a thought that HK would make a super easy drop in motor esc combo for all the brushed horizon/eflite/parkzone (whatever) stuff that's out there. I'd buy one or 10 for the right price.

Yea.. I read somewhere on RCG sometime ago that this geared BL motor was "a jewel" and placed three in my shooping cart to fillout an order within a certain shipping weight. What a mistake that turned out to be. I've tried it in two different applications and it has not lived up to the "jewel" standard by a long shot.

will the 3AMP ESC I hav installed run the AP05 5kV?

or even HH for that matter. I'd happily pay the premium for a manufacturer upgrade kit.

To add to this off-topic

I am a new fan of the Turnigy 1811 motors on 2-cells, too. Spend time in 2012 trying different windings and propeller combinations. Presently use the 1811-2000kv in the Hyper Taxi with a GWS5043 prop. Measured 18-19 watts (as I recall) and has plenty of thrust for 3D flying.

Have the 1811-2900kv in my UMX S-Bach (version 1) with a GWS4530 prop. Reduced the prop to this to limit WOT power to 29 watts Plane is stupid fast and I love it!

Also tried the 1811-1400kv and obtained maximum thrust on 2-cells at only 14 watts. Not enough for my applications. On three cells this motor could be better.

Why replace the E-Flite 180 BL motors? Because they are too noisy due to the design choice of 10 magnets versus a balanced 12 magnets. With balanced motors the raspy noise is gone and the energy waisted in noise now flies the plane.

Me too! They should make a new 10mm gearbox, and kit it with a decent BL motor, perhaps even the mCPX BL main motor (not sure how many kV it is though)

I currently have a hextronic 5g motor in a mini-air p51 but even with 2s and a 5043 prop on it, it doesn't feel like it'll have much pull

I might pick up a few more 1811s, they are honestly not very much bigger than the 5g hextronic/ap05, and I'm telling you that little thing felt ridiculous at WOT.

Corvette, do those 1811s work on the stock Sbach brick? Do you know if they drop right into a new AS3X UMX brick? It would be cool to see if they could be inexpensive drop-in replacements for the 2s UMX planes. I purchased a BL 180 2300kv at the LHS for $30 (!!) because my Beast 3d had the 2500 in it.

I think I read about some good results with the AP05 3000kV in the UMX line as a direct replacement.

My old E-flite sbach has the noisy first version 2500kv motor with only 10 magnets.
My first version Carbon Cub had the quiet 2300kv motor with 14 magnets.

Excellent to learn of this change in the 180 motor design. Although I wonder why 14 magnets when 12 produce a balanced rotation? Anyways, thanks.

Yes, I fly the Turnigy 1811-2900kv with GWS4530 (although the GWS5030 worked fine at 31 watts) with the stock Brick in the S-Bach without AS3X. Love the added power. This motor is a little heavier then stock so I moved the battery toward the tail some more by cutting away more of the wing leading edge. Also, the motor has a larger diameter mounting tube then the E-Flite 180 motor; so I drilled the motor mount on my UMX planes to match this. Then used one set-screw from the unused Turnigy motor mount on the airplane motor mount (after resizing the hole) to secure the motor to the plane.

The 1811 series of motors have not over amped my Bricks (with and without AS3X) but could with a larger propeller. At 31 watts with the GWS5030 I do not feel the need to push it any more and I will be adding this combination to my new UMX Gee Bee purchase. My Gee Bee arrived with the 180-3000kv with 10 magnets and is down on power and up on noise compared to the Turnigy.

I am reusing the 3-pin connector off of the stock 180 BL motors with the 1811's. In addition, I am careful to add a little fore-aft play to the magnet assembly on the 1811's by sanding the thrust washer under the c-clip a little thinner. This reduces friction a bit.

Corvette, My 1811's are all rewound. I find that the motor thrust cannot overcome the power of the magnets so I run without the c clips. This also makes it very easy to switch props by just pulling off the bell putting on prop and pushing bell back on. I usually have planes with me with different props on them so you can mix and match just by trading bells from one plane to another.
Having many crashes in the past years while learning I have not had one unclipped bell come off the motor.

I came up with this for my Sukhoi. Com5 on a MCPX modified frame as a gear box.
