Question
Is wheel alignment a scam?

My 1994 Impala started to handle like a boat and when I got her in the air I noticed a blown tie rod.. After looking at the rest I decided to replace all the steering components .. I plan to do springs ,ball joints, shocks and sway bars soon.

I started to call around to shops and they want $80 + to align all 4 wheels .. I know on my car you can't really align the rear without shims etc plus it doesn't need done ,, tire wear is fine.

Can I set my own toe in the driveway? I really don't want these creepy guys touching my car.

Dunno about you guys over there, but setting steering geometry is much more that simply setting toe-in etc.

No something I'd do myself - and I've done most things on cars (well, when I were younger.. )

True, but assuming he changed nothing but tie-rods...

It depends on how much you paid for those front tires.

I feel the same way , there are only a 1 or 2 shops I use when i'm too lazy to do the work,, and when I do I have the parts in hand when I show up.

I've been watching videos for days on DYI alignment ,, was wondering what the guys at the shop use.

It can save a lot of wear and tear on your tires if it aligned properly. If not, the wear is quite evident.

Some shops offer "lifetime alignment, " but first they find all kinds of stuff to be replaced.

Yep, and they find stuff on every subsequent alignment too. That said, if you do find a shop you trust, alignments are worth what you pay.

I have yet to find a reasonable and reliable way to check toe at home. I'll remove my own stitches but pay a pro to do the alignment. Haven't been ripped off yet.

What's so hard about removing a few stitches? Ain't nothing to a grizzled old puck.

I just stick the car on my Hunter 4 wheel alignment rack... all laser, on screen large easy to read mesuments and specs shown together... makes the job easy if the front end parts are good. Bad parts will show up as well by measurements that keep changing...

It's just about time to do both the upper and lower ball joints in my F250 Super Duty... the parts are about $25 each or about $100... If I had to pay labor I would cry. Just under 6 hours at shop rate... Labor only $550.00 including alignment... $100 out the door sounds better.
