Simple Scratchbuilt Trainer

Hey everyone, I have been out of the hobby for a few years, but I want to get back into it to do a few bigger projects, so I put together this really simple rc foamy to get some stick time and improve my rusty flying skills. Let me know what you think!

Very cool. On the next one you should try a Kfm style wing.

This is really nice! Very clean and somple to build. One thing though, is it self-stabilizing with the flat wing? Or is there a bit of dihedral I did not catch in the video? Thanks. I might build something like this for my dad to train on.

Nice plane.

It's nice to see you back - I followed several of your builds over the years and was always impressed with your simplicity and ingenuity.

Hi everyone,

Thanks for the great comments! It feels really good to get back into flying. No dihedral on the wings at this point, but the foam flexes a bit in flight which creates a slight self correcting effect.

I actually had a slight tangle with a fence while doing some night flying. Nothing a bit of hot glue couldn't fix, but I decided to use this as an opportunity to move onto the next version. Improvements include ailerons, bevelling all leading edges, a 'fuller' fuselage and slightly larger wing.

Still on the to do list is a good paint job, skis for snow, and a KF airfoil (I want to do a side by side comparison of the KF to a straight wing so I am leaving this for now.)

Video coming soon!

Easy Scratchbuilt Foamy

Timmy,
Your model is fantastic to fly !
Can you make us a draw of your flying model ?
What is the thickness of the foam you use ?
Thanks a lot.

Aero - in the video he mentions the foam is 1/2" thick. He used this since the 1/4" foam typically used by many folks for foamies is not available in the colder region where he lives.

I would also be interested in some basic dimensions / sketches and a list of components used. The 3-channel model would be a fantastic build for my 7 y/o son's first RC plane. The 1/2" foam is $12 for a 4x8 sheet at our local HD, and all the sqaure cuts and basic build techniques would be a good start for him.

Hi Guys,

Thank you both for your interest! Once I get the design refined a bit more I will be putting out plans and quite possibly a detailed video on assembly.

Cheers!

Hi, here is the latest version/flight video. As you can see I ditched the ailerons because they just weren't worth having. The plane is fine with only the rudder, and I have no control issues, especially since adding the tip dihedral.

RC Foamy Trainer - Best Version (4 min 10 sec)
