Slow going.

Ordered struts, rudders/tubes, props/shafts/tubes and couplings today from MACK, dont know of Any other outfit that will take your order ...

More done..

WELL !

I ordered the struts and shafts ( etc. ) last Sunday, and to my amazement, they arrived TODAY !

Now I can move forward with tryin to figure out how/where to mount the rudder and stuffing tubes.

Ordered some wide sheets of Balsa on Monday, doesnt look like I'll be gettin that material as fast as MACK can do it.

Frame felt flimsy and it seemed like a good idea to add some more "stringers" and other supports for the planking to get a hold of when its time, its strong enough now to be inverted while mounted to the building board.

Found ideas on where to put additional framework from other big-boat builds ( thanks all ! )

Don't concern yourself about a seemingly flimsy frame. Once the sheeting is on you will be surprised how strong it is.Suggest running a second bead of glue over both sides of the former/sheet joint. That should be done only after the initial application is completely dry.

Spent some time last night trying to figure out just where to put the stuffing tubes in the framework, a critical step.

The plans ( turning out to be more guideline than plans ) show No indication of placement.

The side view of the hull shows the location of the rudder, shaft and prop on the Real boat and thats not necessarily how it's going to work out.

MACK is out of the smaller/shorter height struts ( ST-11 ), got the intermediate height ( ST-21 ) and I am concerned they are Too tall but wont know till I get the frames notched to accept the stuffing tubes ...


The ST-21's may turn out to be the best choice !

ST-11 Diameter: 1/8" Prop Size: 1-3/8" Dia.
ST-21 Diameter: 1/8" Prop Size: 2" Dia.
ST-31 Diameter: 1/8" Prop Size: 3" Dia.

Tim- remember that struts cannot be symmetrical, when used with parallel shafts and a non-flat bottom... Unless you want to set their bases into cutouts in the bottom...

Dumas offers one cast strut. For a 3/16 shaft, 1-1/4 drop.

Strut height

Looked at Dumas, but the stuffing tubes, props, dogs and shafts I have are all 1/8 so its 1/8 struts we need ..

The Dumas 1/8 struts are plastic, didnt want to go with that this time.

A fellow member ( Gravman ) has sent some of the next size down MACK struts to me, when they arrive I'll put them on and we'll see if it looks better ( reduces the distance from the prop tips to the hull bottom ).

Right now the tips would be pretty low in the water, a strike could be a real possibility ( )

Please see pic, there is fully 1/2 inch from the prop tip to where the hull planking will be, seems like that should be reduced..

Tim- What I mean is that the shafts will need to be splayed in the plan view if using these symmetrical struts... or the shaft will have to fit the strut bearings like a hotdog in a hallway, to avoid binding.
In the real world, the shafts will (usually) be parallel in the plan view, and the struts will be handed.

This is true for any hull having deadrise ("dihedral", looking forward).


All that said... it'll be fine! You'll have to rotate each strut about the vertical axis... the angle in the profile view will now be slightly off 10, and the strut itself will be slightly angled to the flow of the water... small issue on a model, if you're not a perfectionist.
How much? I drew up an example in CAD... 10 strut, 10 per side deadrise, and the bottom at 10 going deeper forward. The struts had to be rotated about 1 to bring the shafts parallel... you'll never see it!
OK, I'll go back to sleep now...
