Question: When is a quadcopter actually considered a drone?

Is it when it's autonomous, or semi-autonomous?
Or is it when it's fpv capable?
Or is it when it simply has a camera on board?

When someone sees a a rc boat, or rc car, or rc biplane, I bet no one goes "there goes a drone". Yet, they can all be rigged with fpv and sophisticated controllers just as any multirotor can.

Let's get this straight before the Main Scream Media starts barking their propaganda of fear. There's already a big movement to control the Internet (and don't get me started on the 2nd Amendment). I can see the writing on the wall here. Imagine having to have a license to fly your little quadcopter in your backyard. Or not being allowed to at all.

By the way, to the person who made the thread last night with a Ladybird strapped to an exacto knife that was supposedly flown into a cardboard box, you aren't helping. Or maybe that was your intent?

If you missed this NOVA special if would be well worth finding a repeat.
It took you from WWII through the development of modern day drones.
Even had a section on quads from experimental to hobby grade and had onboard video from the quad being shot down at the hunt club.

I believe many if not most of the UFO sightings the past few years have actually been military or even police UAV's....or chinese lanterns...or ufos....

The interesting thing, or troubling depending on your perspective, is that as we all know we never see what's next or in R&D or the pipeline as it were. We only see what's ok to show off now. Not what will be in the air, on the ground or in the water in 5 or 10 years.

Wanna talk about drones...google or search YouTube for 'DARPA' aka
Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency.

Sorry, couldn't resist...more of a programmable...dogbot...but the term 'drone' could certainly be applied.
These guys are into everything land sea and air...wonder what the budget is...

It was a good show, but totally centered on the military stuff.

One interesting point is how buggy even the 20 million dollar drones are! Notice that the pilot lost his satellite connection just because be banked the Predator a little hard....

It makes you appreciate some of these hobby drones even more - they are quite advanced.

I would argue that an RC vehicle becomes a UAS or Drone as soon as bi-directional communications are implemented in order to do a task.

Excluding basic telemetry that gives airspeed, or battery voltage on modern RC models, a drone generally has data telemetry involved using camera gear, or other sensor packages, in order to send data back to a groundstation, regardless of how simple the groundstation is.

RC plane with pocket camera strapped to it: RC craft
RC plane with pocket camera strapped to it and AV transmitter: drone

Plane with telemetry for airspeed, altitude and battery voltage: RC
Plane with telemetry for airspeed, altitude, battery voltage and gas sensor for environmental survey: drone

I would not think automation is the issue either. I remember back in the days in the 1940's and 1950's with scratch built 0.05cc diesel engined free-flight models. They had these tiny mechanical timers and spring levers that used to engage the flight surfaces at times during the flight, because RC back then was way too expensive.
So, even though these free flight models are "autonomous", would you have considered them a drone?

Bi-directional data would be the defining characteristic, IMO.

Sounds good, Noob Mike. I think most people are going to automatically associate quadcopters with drones, however. Unless perhaps they have an insect or dead cat canopy.
