Question
Discontinued battery, now what?

The nicad needed for my Great Planes Li'l Poke is discontinued!
(yes, i've been away from the hobby awhile)
What would be a replacement?
The motor is a brushed 280 in a gear box, the battery would have been
a 9.6v 350mah nicad.
Thanks for the help,
Kurt

Since lipos are lighter than nicads, I would try a 500mah 2S lipo first if you think it will have enough power with slightly loweeeer voltage. The main thing is get it to balance at the proper CG location. If 2S doesn't provide enough rpm then a 3S 370mah would be my next suggestion.

Bear in mind that the ESC will be expecting the wrong voltage for LVC so if you can't change the battery type the best thing to do is replace the brushed esc with a modern one with switchable battery types. The next best thing to do is don't fly to LVC since LVC for nicad is death to a lipo.

If your brushed ESC has a jumper it is most likely to switch between nicad and lipo so it can correctly detect low voltage. Some ESCs have a jumper for voltage of battery being used.

Welcome to RCGroups Kurt!
the good news, as long as you're OK with a soldering iron, all you'd really need are eight 350Mah 'AAA' NiCads... available pretty much anywhere...
it looks like tower carries some similar items, (600 Mah) but assuming this airplane can handle a little extra weight it would work fine:

alternately, you MAY be able to use a Lipo (depending on the speed controller)
or you could also swap out the speed controller entirely for a Lipo compatible brushed ESC.

if you google 8 cell 350 Mah Nicad you should find some

Although not the most technical suggestion, I would recommend you get a 3s 500mah lipo and go flying with the current setup. As long as you bring it in as soon as you notice a power change, you will be good. I did the same thing with an old Wingo I has sitting around. It still runs fine with the brushed setup, and I'm careful to not run it at full speed and bring it in when the power drops. When/if the motor or esc fails, you can always replace with a brushless setup

Any idea what the nicad would have (aprox) weighed?
The speed control came from a plane that used a Ni-MH 8.4 900mah
and a direct drive brushed 370, that battery at 150g seems way to
heavy for the Poke, but would the speed control handle the job?

Thanks Jim!

Trying to soak all this in, the speed control may not be compatible.
If I change the speed control then I would need-
a speed control
a micro rx
and a radio, oh, and still need a battery!

I remember this hobby now

The speed control and rx are one piece hence the issue

The original pack would weigh approx 85 grams, so 150 is likely too heavy. If you want to make your own pack, keep in mind that Nimhs are heavier than Nicads for a given size. An 8 cell AAA Nimh pack would be near 130 grams. A 2/3 AAA pack would be be in the low 80's so a better match. Cheapbatterypacks.com has loose 2/3AAA 400mah cells at a good price. They will custom build a pack too if you prefer that route.

There are loads of battery pack makers out there ... just Google ...

Or make your own .. get a suitable holder ... batterys ... solder lead to holder ... put batterys in and make sure you securely wrap tape round to guarantee batterys stay in place ... charge up ... go fly.

You will also likely find that you can use greater capacity batterys for same physical size .........

I like the idea of a custom made nicad pack, safe(er) for the esc and no other
upgrades needed.
Thanks for the help

In UK and I'm sure there are same in USA ... I described the pack to a small business who make up replacement packs to order ... was a JR Tx pack ... within a few days - the new pack was in the post to me. It was 2300 mAh capacity against the old one of 600mAh ... it was perfect fit ... and cost literally only pennies more than my buying the parts myself.

Kurt,
I've got 2S/500mah and 3S/800mah lipos and a 7.2V/600mah 6-cell NI-CD if you want to experiment with those.
