Feel I'll end up going down this way too. No matter how I try (so far!), have to admit all the B/L tail conversions I've been trying just don't measure up to the brushed F45/450. Or the belt tail, either. Close, but no banana!
Kudos on recovering your heli after losing Ali. Have done it too, but started with a 3chan FP abomination that HAD no Ali. Gave me a seldom used skill, at least.
Plus the tail boom now is part of my 5 to 6 mm 450 adaptor lol.
Using my Align DS415M (450) spare servos atm. Only 27 bucks each! (but reversed function with respect to MJXs).
Best
John.

One thing I like about the Walkera Tx is the ability to reverse the servos on the Tx. Makes life a lot easier.

Had a whole lot of noise resonating through the canopy of the belt driven model which is probably due to the metal motor mount. Took most of the noise out with the use of Mini Limbsavers stuck inside the canopy. For those not in the know, these are used to help silence things like sights and rests on compound bows. I should call the company and tell them they may have a whole new market for these things. LOL

All that clay in the nose was needed to get some balance when I put the belt drive on. Had to do this plus move the ESC to the front.

My alternate FP 450 build -

First, the MJX F45!

Then -

- http://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/s...x_Compat_.html (frame)
- http://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/s...dProduct=11884 (motor)
- http://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/s...dProduct=15259 (pinion)
- http://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/s...idProduct=4312 (ESC)
- http://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/s...dProduct=14665 (battery)

Note - the frame is an all metal version. 20 bucks dearer, but the bits are far more useful in the long term imo.

And, for antrotation bracket
- http://helidirect.com/align-v2-fusel...x-p-24340.hdx?

Skids -
Align 500. Just about indestructable

- The canopy shown below is an align 450 plus ($20 or so) - the HK with the kit also works, just doesn't look as good.

Tail - Still a work in progress. That shown is a Turnigy 1811 swinging a 5x3 prop: best is still the brushed from the MJX F45.

Some stats: Has lifted a 250 gram payload (AUW nearly 900g) and been radar clocked - not with the weights! - at 45kph+

Pics -

Are the 500 skids a simple bolt on or did you have to drill new holes?

New holes, but super easy (and superstrong afterwards). About $10 from LHS over here.

A friend of mine put trex 600 skids on his 500 to help with stability. Might just do that

OK. If I start busting these things up I will definately switch. One thing I did do was dump those rubber skid nuts and drilled holes in the mounts for set screws.

The holes (for grubscrews) are already there with 500 skid gear.

Perfect. Another selling point.

Also found another good trick was to use longer fixing screws for the skids than standard, and hotglue the protruding bits to the frame (for added strength). You should be able to see this in pics above.
They've taken one hell of a pounding in some test flights, passed with flying colors. Also add stability, as above.

Been a lot higher, arrowshooter - paid the price! lost heli. Sometimes think I shouldn't be trusted with a helicam. Feel this insane urge to go to bloody stupid heights ('oh, i'll get orientation when it comes back down'). Not always.
Would have loved to have recovered the cam memory card, even if not the heli. Ultimate post!
FPV next, at least I'd have the video - and maybe the face of the finder lol?

So I want to try a 3s pack. What mAh would be good? 2200?

Krikie! I am still having a little trouble with getting the motor on the Walkera Tx/Rx system to start before 20%. I bind with a separate receiver pack, move the stick to the top, plug in the ESC with the red wire removed from the Rx, wait for beeps, move stick to bottom wait for beeps, unplug the batteries and turn off the Tx. I also tried binding as per normal, then unplugging the battery, move the stick to the top, then plug the battery back to the ESC but it just binds normally. Thing flies great, just like a little more room at the bottom.
