Moving to Columbia Gorge

I'm moving to White Salmon WA area for a new job. (A UAV company called InSitu, way cool!)

I know some of you guys live in Portland, I'm looking forwards to hooking up with some of you to try and knock your foamies in the dirt.

I've been scoping the Ptown soaring club site for hill info, McKinley Ridge looks interesting. Also been scouring my copy of Topo! for WA and finding a pretty big batch of other possible hills down there, especially one called Silver Star Mtn which turns out to be about 6 miles W of McKinley.

www.passoaring.us Some info on slopes near you.
Klickitat will be close to you and can work with no
wind on the river and is best in the summer. I think
it gets wind from hot air rising up the valley. A good
site for EPP, rough landing but smooth lift in close.

Lumber site is a west wind. It can have bumpy lift in close.
Good landing and large enough slope for full scale.

You will have fun. Do you windsurf?

What!? Your moving?

Well, if you have to move, that's a pretty great area to move to. Carrie and I will be down there during the summer months to kayak and do some sloping. Let me know your address and # so we can hook up.

Congratulation on the new job.....finally.

Welcome down to our neck of the woods MtnGoat!

I fly out at the Hood River site late spring and summertime when those W winds really get cooking. Hope to meet you out there sometime.

No, don't windsurf but I suppose I may need to give it a go. The location of Insitu is right on the water, so that would make for fun lunches I suppose!

I looked over the slope sites listed (lumber, Klickitat) and they look pretty interesting. It will be fun to try those out along with the others I've identified as possibles. 3 Corner Rock 8 miles N of Skamania looks really good, a nice basin facing west with not much brush as far as I can tell from the airphoto, and it's a driveup.

Will be glad to see you down there DTD. Did you settle on a new mtn car yet?

Wow DTD, sweet ride. You did splurge! Looking forwards to seeing you get it dirty. It's too clean.

If u move to the gorge u have to windsurf. The gorge is a windsurf Mecca. The winds in the summer are fantastic 25+ every day. Standing waves more than mast high. And the good thing is if you break something u are always half way to either shore (vice the ocean). If u don't get run down by a barge.

Any way back to sloping.

For East winds in the gorge, check out "Cliffside" which is just NE of the Dalles (near the John Day dam). Information available on the Cascade Paragliding website. (Many paragliding sites work well for R/C sloping).

The Klickitat site works best with a west wind through the Gorge. It has great lift but is best suited for foamies like the Weasel.

Here's a link to a good site for checking the wind:

Here's one of my videos of the Klickitat site:

Weasel: Loops and spins (1 min 56 sec)

Say hi if you see me there.
