AR6400 Challenge!

Ok- I'm challenging myself to build a micro model around an AR6400 (OR clone) for less than $40!

But first, I have to decide what plane to make.

I'm not looking for a nutball, but I want something I can really beat on, is fairly slow, but has power for a good strong climb (Low Wing Loading ). Scale is cool but not my thing.

Two questions- What should I make, and is there a sub $40 AR6400 clone?

SB

I'm sorry. I'm still playing catchup with a lot of terms that get used on this site. I didn't understand a lot of this sentence.

1. What is ar6400 "official"?

2. "With guts", which implies that the board is sold without "guts". What "guts" are missing one from another?

3. Where are these sales found on RCG.com?

Thankyou

There are the AR6400's and then there are the 3CH receiver type that comes with the Night Vapor, Champ, Etc.

Guts means motor, gearbox, battery, prop, extra linear actuators, Etc.

Sales are found in the classified section of the forums.

there is the 'offical' spektrum ar640 that retails for 60.00
then there is teh targethobby.com brick the retails for 20.00 and is of questionable origin and lower (but seemingly, reliable) quality.
guts generally refer to ar6400, 1 external servo and 1 brushed motor and prop.

Sorry for the wait- I have to convince my parents to let me buy an AR6400 and motor, and then wait for one to pop up in the classifieds

Ok! Now I have some UM Sukhoi guts and I bought a second servo for it, so that puts me at $41. Guess it'll be the $45 dollar challenge now!

I decided to build the Axis V4 by Scott Neeman, (Here) as an attempt at a mild 3D plane. I'm not much of a 3D pilot yet, but that's why I want to make a 3D plane to practice on!

I printed out the plans taped them together, and had at it with a razor blade. I ended up with an airframe that was too heavy, so I took another shot at it and the second attempt was lighter. I'll take pictures soon.

Then I installed the Suk motor, and did a thrust test. I could hover at half throttle! Pretty good for a first attempt. I still have about 8 grams of weight to add with the two aileron servos and pushrods, but that's fine. I'm expecting the weight W/O battery to be about 36 grams, and weight with 160 MAH 1 Cell to be 40 g.

Wish me luck!

Good luck! looking forward to seeing your build. I've been thinking about building the V4 for a while now... But for brushless and 2S.

Here is my version of Scott's Axis (ver1?). I scaled the original plan down for the AR6400 and guts from the UM Suhkoi XP. The plane has 15" WS and only one servo for the ailerons. The weight was under 40g.

My video.

Axis V3 F3P practice plane. (3 min 7 sec)

You say nutball! I sdee you have decided but you can build either of these for 2 bucks + 6400 and motor. Nutball and my own design.

KC,

That's Great! I hope mine turns out that good.

The WS on the V4 is 20" and the chord is a bit bigger, so I think that mine'll come out a little bit floatier, par the wing loading. The only thing is the weight- I might have to cut some holes.

How did you pull off the one servo aileron?

And brushless would be AWESOME! just maybe scale the plans up a bit?

Miatamama, something's wrong with your images- it won't let me view them?

EDIT-Wait, no they look fine now. That's the PI Yak that you posted in the AR6400 forum, isn't it?

I tried an elevon sumo first, scratch built from pictures by I R Irv, but it couldn't fly at all.

The aileron set up is just like the stock setup in the Suhkoi... one aileron with the bell crank.

Ok. I bought the guts from a Suk XP, and never got to see the airframe, so I wouldn't know.
