9116 Direct Drive Tail
The search is over!
Finally, after 1 month intensive testing with two 9116 I'm able to present you a solution for fast dying tail motors:
The Direct Drive Tail Unit of a ESKY Honey Bee CP3
It improves the behavior noticeably, you will get MUCH more tail authority, you'll notice when flying FF right turns where the stock tail doesn't do much.
It is no real plug and play mod, but manageable even for the unexperienced.
Tools: Soldering iron, a little hacksaw, exacto knife.
Now the fun begins:
You have to mod the old stock motor holder according to the picture. Just cut everything away but the motor "cup".
As the original stock tail motor has flat sides, and the new motor is round you may take a Dremel and a fitting cutting head to the inside of the motor mount and make it round to get a perfect fit. (thanks to eagle-eyed Steve!)
But it works well enough without such perfectionism.
Solder the cables of the old OEM tail motor to the new motor.
Put the motor in the modded holder, fasten with the supplied screws and add the tail prop.
Reassemble the tail and mount it to the 9116.
Now you may have to get the bird back in balance, levelling the swash again and have to set the tail subtrim in the TX to something ~100L or the tail will overpower the stock main motor by far.
This mod runs in one bird for ~80 flights now, has survived a second main motor and still is set to 105L
The second bird has 30 flights with this mod and it runs still as new (110 L subtrim).
Edit 4th of July '13:
Bird 1: over 200 flights, still strong as new.
Bird 2: n/a any more -sold it

[ UPDATE ]
Here is the kit installed on my highly modded 9116.
Here is an in flight video, showing head holding performance.
I only used rudder slightly on takeoff, and during the spin.

Update, The FX059 tail motor has also turned out to be a great solution.
It's longer than the 9116 motor, and has cooling vents.
It's also cheaper than any other motor, under $3 each in lots of 3.
Although it bolts right in, the pinion may not line up, and it can be
tricky to install. I believe there is information about this in my blog.

You have done a great service for your fellow 9116-ers.
This looks the THE mod to do for peace of mind.
The motor I was pushing (S031 Tail motor) works fine, but this will last
much longer, and costs one dollar more.
Some other reasons to use this tail drive:
1) Lower rotating mass, allowing for quicker response and easier flying.
2) The direct drive allows lower motor RPM, giving longer bushing and brush life.
3) No gears to break or incorrectly mesh, and elimination of gear whine.
4) Elimination of the cheap plastic tail shaft bushings.
5) More efficient due to lower friction (no gear mesh or shaft bushings)
For those of you who don't want to modify your tail, or are just plain chicken,
there is another solution that has worked decent for me.
The tail motor from a Syma S031 has slightly more thrust than the stock unit,
has a slightly shorter lifespan, and costs $3.40.
You have to unsolder the included wires, and solder on the stock tail wires,
but other than that it is plug and play, no cutting or modifying anything.
It looks like the WL Toys V912 has a larger tail motor that might possibly
bolt right in as well. I found it for under $4 at Banggood.
In either case, Mike's DD tail motor is a much better solution, and will last MUCH longer.

I ordered the parts needed to complete this conversion and had a thought about trimming the motor. Would it make sense for me to get an Xtreme 180 motor to replacing the main and trim it back since this tail might be able to keep up, or is that still a bad idea?

This direct drive is so powerful it will hold the tail without question (just look at the subtrims needed to tame it down for a stock motor...).
There are some cons adding a Xtreme motor:
- the 9116 is a cheap bird - so 12 USD for a main motor that needs a regular brushes exchange is quite over the top....
- You have to change too much - blades, rotor head according to blades, flybar, etc.. makes no sense going too deep into that. (see following point)
- the whole bird is outdated, better get something newer but only IF it has to be a ~200 size 4CH FP maybe a V912 would be the better base.
But it is up to you, this hobby has nothing to do with being reasonable - it is about having fun!
I will not take further steps in the whole 9116 modding, I'll just provide any help for those who could not have been talked off to buy a DH9116 and want to stay as stock as possible.
BTW - just seen your printed chassis - niiice! You have a 3D-printer for prototyping it?

Well I just got my First 9116 i went to take it for it's first flight ever! and the tail motor came DOA... I order the parts to this Mod. Ty for all the info you guys posted.

I shipped the chassis design off to a printing service since I was already having some other parts made up for an automotive project. It should be at least another week before the parts get here but I'll be sure to post pictures when it does.
