Flying Styro P-51D and BF-109 kits

Happy Holidays All,

I have both kits mentioned above and am going to build them more or less together. The Mustang is 1/20 scale, the BF-109 is 1/15 scale. The owner of my LHS literally gave me the P-51D as he wanted to see someone build it as RC and knew I'd do it.

If there's any interest in an outline of my progress, I'll post some pics. Or if anyone has any advice, please share it.

I plan on using IPS(or MPI EPU) powerplants in both, and am still working out what control surfaces to use. Originally on the Mustang, I wanted to use a KP-01 or build a similar powerplant using rechargeable button cells to conserve weight.

Both kits are very detailed, the Mustang is noticeably better quality, not only the foam its'self, but the vacuum formed pieces as well. The Messerschmidt is the old packing type foam, but still a very nice kit.

Here's a pic of the BF-109, I can take one of the P-51D if there's any interest.

Yes it is. The airplane was made by Flying Styro for rubber power or CO2. It ends up with a 22 1/2 inch wingspan and is about 19 inches long. The prop that comes with it needs to be trimmed down anyway, so the missing prop isn't really a big deal. Are you thinking of building it?

Box looks like this:

Take a look inside the kit, it's pretty impressive for an all foam plane. Hobby Lobby sells them and has a construction page for converting to RC. Theirs ended up at 6.5 oz. I think I can get about an ounce lighter.

Hobby Lobby has the pre-painted P-51D, 59.00. They have a larger Messerschmidt too. If you can find the unpainted kits, they're very well priced, I've seen them around $30. VERY detailed. I'll take some pics real quick for you guys.

Rumor is that they fly pretty good. I'm going to do some building tonight and post some pics tomorrow. They both indicate a 30 hour build time!!! I honestly can't see how they could take so long to put together, even with my glacier-slow painting. Maybe the 30 hours counts a full night sleep and some meal breaks, lol...

I tried out thew mustang and weight is the key, I never got mine to fly properly. I I built another I would use 340 lipo's and I would use 4.4 gram servos and a GWS IPS-S2 geared motor (I used a B and that had way too much torque it flew sideways for a hundred feet). Leave the cocpit out and just think light!

Thats what I would do now anyway.

Good Luck, Alan
