I worried about the sanding ridges at each glue line. So I bought a blue foam Flotation Billet from a lumber yard. It was 12" X 24" X 96" to start with. I cheated as it was my first foam scratch build. Used the plans frames as the body stations.

The solid body was about 6 hours with 33 grit paper & then 100 grit for final.
I accidentally built 2 left wing panels first.

Hand forming of foam is easy if you have a good set of plans.

Really nice. I dont think i could carve or build that way, heck im trying my best Not to sand

Trick is using the right glue and sanding it at the right time,so it rolls off sorta. But the plugs have been coming off the bow really nice that helps a lot too.

This build has maybe 2 hr of sanding, tops, to get to glass work, and the way it laid up it wont be much other then another coat with micro balloons to hit mirror finish

of course another 2 hrs of sanding in between
Guess i cant get away from it.

until you get out the magic wand and become a wizard sanding will allways be in a scratch builder's future

You nailed the gluing problem !!
I used epoxy on the China Clipper below. Hull is a bunch of H D 2" thick pieces lengthwise.

What a 6 hour cutting BELOW the surface of every seam line !!!! Then fill it in & final sand. I used my electronic 3" wire side cutter to do the job. I took Ibuprofin after finishing.

After that mistake. I went back to the big blue Styrofoam billets.

Thinking of doing a foam hydroplane.

Good news is we are gonna meet the goal of 1.5lb empty air frame

Finished up the layup and epoxy.
A rudder was added as an after thought,
pocket was made so the servo is not in the exist tunnel
while slits for the control horn protrude the fiberglass
Everything sprayed with a fill primer.


still need to clean up the hatch areas from the build up of epoxy, couldnt resist placing the unit in there for a few shots

Larger wiring
Modification and installation of an old fly-fly twin seat F-100 sabre canopy
bigger,metal gear servos
larger connection rods,easy connectors, etc
larger Lipo
some paint

We now sit at just under 4lbs
Man does the weight creep up on you!

Did a poor mans thrust test, seeing 4lb 9oz with no thrust tube *See video I think its funny
