Question
What's a good ESC for a 450 size heli?

I've decided to dust off the old Trex 450 and fly it this season. It's been sitting for a couple of years now. I've since robbed it of it's Phoenix 25. I just thinking that these days maybe there is a better ESC for helis than a Phoenix 25 so I thought I'd ask here before I placed an order.

Thanks in advance.
Mike

I have had LOT of 450's thru my hands and popular ESC are ranging from 30 to 40 amps. I am sure soemone knows more and can help more as to what brand is better than others. 40 amp turnigy or exceed can be bought cheaply from almost anywhere.

Price

I guess it depends on what you want to spend. Turnigy Plush are cheap. Castle Creations still seem popular. I recently got a YGE for an AP helicopter and really like it.

I never have either but at that price, I think I'm going to give one a try.

It is a name brand and unless you really doing some hard 3D you won't need any more power. I am lucky I could sport or casual fly my 450's. Now just waiting for the weather to break and try my fbl 500. Also getting a full scale fuselage with retracts for my other 500.

You can't do much better on price for features than this esc, The only downside is that it's HUGE! oh, and it's out of stock at the moment.

I'm 49. My days of lightning fast reflexes are well behind me so 3D flying isn't anything that interests me. I've become a competitive DLG pilot but I want to get back into flying helis as a diversion from the F3K practice. If I can manage some flips and maybe a hammerhead turn with the little heli, I'll be happy.

Thanks for the advice.

Mike

Personally ive used the Align 35a, E-Flite 40a, and a generic HK 40a, but i found my true happiness with the CC Phoenix Ice 50a... Keep in mind I have a GoPro on my 450 so 50a is probably a little too much for you ;-) but a nice cool ESC under $100 with a free PC USB cable to program... I'm Happy ;-)

yes and it works fine. It came in both my 450 3D and 450x. One little tip about this ESC. There is a little hidden switch that changes the BEC voltage from 4.8 to 6V. It comes stock set for 4.8V. You may want the higher voltage to getthe best servo performance. If you are running and seperate BEC then you would not care.

45A Superbrain

If you're a bit of a gadget freak like me, you might consider the Turnigy Superbrain 45A

It's actually a re-branded Hifei King Kong 45A, and you might even find the Hifei version at a similar price. It's not overly heavy, is 6s capable, has a good 3.5A switching BEC, and has a great governor mode.

It's a data logging ESC - so if you have the USB Adaptor you can hook it up to your pc and upload data logs from your flights, showing motor rpm, current draw, battery voltage and ESC temperature. That can be useful information for tuning your setup, and for me it just adds to the fun of flying the heli, but then I do like to mess with stuff.....
