First scale sailplane/rebuild

Got this 1/3.75 scale Discus 2 from a buddy (Thanks Mike!) as a bit of a basket case.
It had been involved in a crash, and had the stab busted, fuse broken at the base of the fin, and the wings also had some unknown amount of damage. Mike had already done the major repairs, and added some filler and some rough shaping to the damaged areas.
The fuse is molded fiberglass, and the stab and rudder are hollow molded pieces, but the wings are foam with carbon and then Obecchi over them.

It was handed off to me in pieces (but pretty much all there!) on the premise that I would put it back together, and come fly aero-tow with the guys.
Why not, right??!!

Anyway, this poor plane sat and sat in my shop. every so often I would take a look at it, and think, "This is gonna take a bit of work to get going!" Some of the areas, like retracts and spoilers, I really had ZERO experience with. I know its not rocket science, but I'm most comfortable doing what I already know, or think I know, than what I don't know about at all!

Anyway, it's almost back together. I have had a bit of a vacation, being off from the 21st of December to today, the 1st of Jan, 2013. Now its back to work, but it looks like I will actually MAKE the Feb 2 Coachella Aero-tow with this plane functional! Yay, I'm looking forward to it!

Attached are some pics.

You did it, Target! I knew this plane was going to a good home. Fantastic craftsmanship as always.

See you at Coachella,

Mike

Thanks, Dude!
I still have a few things left to do, but Dennis was totally surprised by the after, him having seen the before. I think he was more impressed by how close it was to being flyable.

Still to do:
Hook up aileron linkages (a cake-walk!)
Install tail wheel
paint underside of stab red (for altitude orientation help)
hang and spring retract doors
Install batteries, Rx, etc (parts due to arrive tomorrow)
Check balance
Program radio

So, its looking good for Feb 2.
There are a few other things I can and will like to do, if the time is available, but the bulk of it is done.

Thanks again for your kindness!

Thanks Vic,
Funny thing is, the doors that I took the effort to make are MIA somewhere in my shop right now (in theory!)....

Oh well, they will show up, or they will be made better the second time around!

So, most things are done.

Plane is programmed on radio, all servo and linkage installs finalized.
Doors are hung, but not yet sprung, and the retract will need to be re-installed.
Satellites for the AR9100 Powersafe Rx need to be installed.
Pull cable and spring for the canopy release need to be installed.
Wing tip anti-scrape devices need to be installed (Hmmmm, what to use?!?)

Here is what HAS happened:
FOUND the lost retract doors (yay).
Painted the stab underside red.
Radio/battery wiring finalized.
Battery tray designed and installed with fiberglass.
Balance lead shot and epoxy poured in.
Gear doors hinged.
Radio programmed.
Canopy latch/release mechanism designed/fabricated/installed.

Needs to be done:

Canopy release linkage designed (need to by small compression spring tomorrow).
Add 1/2oz lead to one aileron servo bay for lateral balance.

Getting close!

Looking forward to the maiden myself. Worked on making tip wheel mounts yesterday. Hope my 1/2" Sullivan tail wheels arrive on time!

Thanks Jay!
