Hello everyone,

I am thinking about selling my protos500 for an fpv quad. I allready flown a plane but I am really getting excited seeing those quad's fly.

But what setup to choose is the question. I am aiming for 8-9mins flight minimum. Propably will take the SK450 frame because my father in law has one spare that I could use.

For the rest I'm kinda struggling for getting the best setup. I saw that bigger props give me more flight times, but to big gives extra instability while descending. I like sporty flying, but also smooth flying. A kinda mixed flyer.

Thought about getting the NTM 28-26 1000kV on 3S as it is pretty light.

When I want that kinda flying times what is the best prop I can take? Really like the graupners because of the good balancing.

What do you guys think?

Is there nobody that can advise me?

I'm also thinking to use my graupner mx20 with GR24 for this quad. Is this enough for flying trough trees?

If you don't overweight your quad, you can see the 8-9mins easily. If I were in your place I would take the ntm 2830-750kv motors with 10x4.5 props, and 3000mah 4s lipos, that setup would give everthing you want.

Just to give you the idea, my. Latest setup is ntm 2826-1200kv motors with 8x4.5 props, 2650mah 3s lipos, my auw with fpv and a gopro is 1.3kg, it flies incredibly smooth, and a perfect acro flyer, but my flight times are short, around 6-7mins.

Do you have any experience with graupner radio's for quadcopter around obstacles?

A friend of mine uses the mx-20 without any problems, if you don't have that radio yet, you can go a cheaper way, I use the turnigy 9x radio with frsky module. You don't need anything more than that, it is absolutely enough for fpv and obstacles, ni need to spend a lot of money, if you crash and wreck a graupner rx, even a new rx is more expensive than the 9x/frsky combo.

Does your friend use it for fpv flying and by that I mean, at quite a distance (say 500m for instance) going round trees and stuff? The range without obstacles is superb, but I actually don't want to buy a long range UHF system which is really expensive.

Even my turnigy/frsky radio has no issues on range or on obstacles, I have flown with my quad over 700meters, and been around trees with no issues, if even my cheapo set can do it, then I thing that your graupner won't take a sweat on doing the same thing. install 10x4.5 props and 5000Mah 3S lipo to see 12 min flights.

I've looked that motor up, but it is only 140watt that 28-30 750kV motor. Most motors have many more, but if you have experience with it I will try.

If anyone else has a good idea about great motors (maybe a bit more expensive than hobbyking prices?) Just want it to be good. Don't care if it is 50 bucks more or less.

More watts are not always the best choice, it means the motor is thirstier

i have used those motors for a long time, many crashes, i learned flying with them, and now my friend are using my old motors, and they are still strong on power and still in one piece

i really recommend these motors, do not overweight your quad with a heavy frame or big batteries,every gram will affect your sport flying characteristic.

Make it simple and light, don't use anything!! that you don't need.Some 20/30A high pwm escs, some plastic(for the learning process) 10x4.5 props, the ntm motors, 3000-3300mah 4s lipos and a fc board and you are good to fly then you can go for better props, fpv and stuff...

Do you fly that setup with gopro? In that case I won't have that much weight. Today my father in law and I build a quad with the frame I mentioned which was about 1050gram without gopro and battery, but heavier motors than the one I am looking at from now on.

What is your auw weight with the setup you recommend me?

(and btw, I passed the learning process a long time ago on my 3D heli's and wookong octo, without fpv). Because this is a new type of flying I want to know what combo is best for my needs.

As I said I was at learning process when I was using these motors, if I am not mistaken I was flying 9 mins of fpv with these motors, on a 2650mah 4s lipo, with auw of 1200grams(plus/minus 50grams). I did not have a a gopro that time, I askedmy friend for his setup with my old motors, when he calls me back, I'm going to write it here.

My friends quad with ntm 750kv motors, he uses 11x4.5 props with 4000mah 3s lipos on an auw of 1.5kg, it's flying for 10mins

This one has a 3s 5000 battery, auw is about 1400g, motors Sunnysky X2216 880KV with 10" props. Flight time is 19 min. I will now check 12" props, I guess the kv of the motors are lower than rated...

Btw. the motor are affordable, the quality is great, especially bearings (much better than NTM stuff)


P.S. Flying aroung obstacles has *ever* a certain risk with 2.4 Ghz. Sometimes it will work, sometimes not. If you fly behind a tree with foliage, you'll have to get a reflected signal from somewhere. Here 35/40 Mhz equipement has big advantages
