The devo 7 is the only one that they haven't been working on, mostly due to the lack of usb I think. The developer is working on the 12 now... My 12 is waiting in my mailbox...

First, the preface, I hold my radio at my waist, with the antenna sticking out away from me. As you may have heard, the radio signal radiates out from the end of the antenna like a donut, NOT like laser beam coming out the end of the antenna.

I set the heli on the ground and walked away, pumping the throttle (I can't see the blade pitch change, but I can see them spin). I made it about 35 yards before it stopped responding. Not that great.

Remember how I said earlier that the signal doesn't come out the end of the antenna? I tilted the 7E so the antenna was pointing straight up, and it started responding again. So I kept moving back until it got spotty, then until I couldn't get anything out of it. The signal was intermittent around 55 yards, and totally dead by 65. I had line of sight to the heli the whole time, but it was sitting on my gravel driveway.

So, not exactly a full range radio, especially since the antenna has no "hinge" on it to change it's angle. Unless you hold your radio straight vertical, you have a range of about 30 yards until it gets spotty. More than enough for a micro heli or quad, probably enough for a 250 or 450 (even when I *think* my 450 is far away, it's usually within 30 yards), definitely not enough for a full size airplane.

No idea if the DSM2 range through Deviation will be any different, or if perhaps a different receiver would do better.
Cool, thanks for doing that. From what I have read on the DeviationTX.com forum, the external 'antenna' on the 7E is a fake, with nothing inside. The actual antenna is just a wire inside the case. There has been discussion of trying to install a real external antenna, but at this point I don't think anyone has tried it. It sounded like the transmitter power was actually reduced as well, so while a better antenna might help, the 7E was intentionally designed to be shorter in range than the other Devo models.

Have you done anything similar with another radio, like one of the other Devo models? I am wondering what kind of range one would normally expect. I probably won't do anything that would exceed the limits of the 7E any time soon, if ever. I am, however, insatiably curious, probably to my own detriment. :-)

I found a post on another forum where someone compared 3 transmitters, and found a range of well over a mile on the one with the shortest range, and something like 2.8 miles with the longest. Unless I get into FPV, I don't see doing anthing over about 35-40 yards, but one never knows.

Anyway, another day, another several posts closer to 999. :-)

On mine, the antenna wire definitely runs up into the black plastic external "antenna". So I don't believe it's a fake. There's some sort of wire up there.

Negative. This is my one and only walkera radio. My other transmitter is an older JR X-388S with an OrangeRX DSM2 module on it. With the DSM2 module, I can easily go 50 yards while depressing the range check button...I don't know when it quits responding. Without the range check depressed, I'd guess the range is several hundred yards at least, but I've never found the limit to that either (thank god). Furthest I've had a model was probably my freewing F15, and that was probably 200 yards away (it looks awfully small by then).
