There really is a devo12 in my mailbox by the way...

JHawk, I know I've been seeing you avatar here and I think on helifreak, but have you been on deviation as well? Are you running custom firmware?

Yep, I'm on HeliFreak too. Never heard of Deviation. Joining now, though!

I have a Devo 7 that I'm flying a V450D03 with right now. I'd like to move up to a Devo 10 or 12...one day...

I can probably get by with a 7E, as at some point my 6 year old will complain if I have a better radio than the stock that came with his Mini Pet and he doesn't, and I could pass it down to him and upgrade, but I would like to know what I am getting. And yes, I know that even with Deviation the Devo line will not run his Mini Pet, or my V202, but I am getting a Syma X1, and I plan to transplant a Turnigy module into the Devo for that, and I hope to have things that are Spektrum compatible after that. Anyhow, any info on range is appreciated greatly.

Arnie
So here's my not-so scientific range test...

First, the preface, I hold my radio at my waist, with the antenna sticking out away from me. As you may have heard, the radio signal radiates out from the end of the antenna like a donut, NOT like laser beam coming out the end of the antenna.

I set the heli on the ground and walked away, pumping the throttle (I can't see the blade pitch change, but I can see them spin). I made it about 35 yards before it stopped responding. Not that great.

Remember how I said earlier that the signal doesn't come out the end of the antenna? I tilted the 7E so the antenna was pointing straight up, and it started responding again. So I kept moving back until it got spotty, then until I couldn't get anything out of it. The signal was intermittent around 55 yards, and totally dead by 65. I had line of sight to the heli the whole time, but it was sitting on my gravel driveway.

So, not exactly a full range radio, especially since the antenna has no "hinge" on it to change it's angle. Unless you hold your radio straight vertical, you have a range of about 30 yards until it gets spotty. More than enough for a micro heli or quad, probably enough for a 250 or 450 (even when I *think* my 450 is far away, it's usually within 30 yards), definitely not enough for a full size airplane.

No idea if the DSM2 range through Deviation will be any different, or if perhaps a different receiver would do better.
