Trial of a Kevlar hinge. The hinge itself(outline of the braid in green) works fine, but as I expected before I started,I had to bevel the balsa sheet to allow movement. This defeats the object of preserving a smooth under surface,so I think either acrylic or over/ under tape hinges(another trial, never tried these either)will be the way to go..
I also need to offset the balsa to give enough width to cut the top bevel. |

Digging a trench.:-)
I needed to cut away the top skin and foam to insert a 10mm section to make the hinge line. This really needs to be square to the lower surface; after some head scratching as to how I could achieve a square and accurate cut,the piece of glazing pine caught my eye.Practically the correct angle!A bit nerve racking cutting into the wing, but I could feel the epoxy on the lower skin,so it went ok.A nice sharp wood chisel makes short work of cleaning the groove out. I need a nice fit here, too tight will risk distorting the wing....so far so good. |
