Removing a VTX case and keeping it cool

is it a concern? I took mine out and it warms up pretty quick, seems like the back side gets hotter faster.

What have you done?

my 1.3g 800mw

Nothing.
Keep at least one large side exposed to open air outside the plane, and you'll be fine with
that particular (FOX800) video Tx, powered at 12V.

I would use a combo of velcro, zip staps, and a velcro strap for this application.

Adding a small heatsink helps a great deal as well

Helps greatly with what exactly? This particular VTX doesn't need one.
Yes it runs hot to the touch, but once they survive the normal few minutes of operation (
when most electronics fail if they're going to fail), they've proven to be extremely reliable.
I've run em indoors with no airflow for hours at a time while testing, and even accidentally
run em with the antenna off, and still going strong.

One thing that probably helps is that it's a bit overrated. On 1280Mhz at 12V it puts
out closer to 600mW than 800mW. If you pushed it to like 13.5V it could output 800mW
and probably run too hot to use without a heatsink. I've been out 7 miles with solid
video with this thing though, so 600mW is more than enough.
