Question
Foam U2s ?

Who is still making them about the same size as the old Phase 3 ?
Bare frame is preferred.

Hi All,

FWIW, Lanier R/C had a foam U-2 model for a while. It was never meant to be a EDF model but rather an R/C glider or FF.

I still happen to have one in the box. Hmmm I wonder if....

I ordered all the body parts to make a non-powered tow line glider. Want to sit under a umbrella with a cooler of food & tonics this summer.

That model was called a U-2, but it did not resemble one at all.

It was wide winged. Long skinny body. & white

Sounds more like a hungry angel.

I never could convert that plane very well. Too fragile on landings less than perfect.

Ordered a Corona receiver Synth 4 ch. & 4 HS-55s for the hollow U2 glider.

Hoping I can thermal it with a gentile winch launch.

The drag from the inlets is going to more or less kill the performaces as a pure glider. Clear fairings over the inlets will help, but I do not see it as a decent performing sailplane.....

I accepted the poor performance as a trade off to having a scale military aircraft.

Not sure about frontal drag with the 2 inlet covers being less draggy than the air flows in & out ?

On the fence about that one due to very slow speeds of a U2.

Ordered the wings also. So I will now be able to use very light spackle to fill in all those body & wing lines. Plus anything else that creats more drag. Will fill in all the aileron surfaces & go to a straight R E M set up with pull-pull strings for lighter setup.

It looks like a wing load of 6.4 oz. per sq. ft. as a non-powered glider.
The wing is sort of Clark Y with a reflex curve in the trailing portion. I do not know airfoils.

Properly designed fairings to cover the inlets will indeed be less draggy than the open inlets. Leaving the ducting open means the entire duct area will create parasitic drag. Also, without a fan running, some air will pile up around the outside of the inlets, creating more drag. Then there is the drag of the rear of the aircraft being a couple of inches in diameter.

If you study the various popular PSS (power slope scale) jet designs, you will see that the designers usually greatly reduce the size of the inlets from scale to get rid of this problem. And none of them ever make the ducts flow through.

I own the powered version of the Phase III U-2 and it does not have a great glide performance power off. A decent glide, but not a great one.

Not many people posted about the flight characteristics.
Definately make up the inlet cones.

I was floored by the input currents of 33 amps or about 400 watts input power. I am seriously thinking of doing a pusher prop setup that I used in the GWS F-15. It allows simple COG with any weight parts.
