Puff the Magic Dragon, from the song (Skeletonized Foam Indoor Plane)

And, now for something completely different ...

This is what's on my workbench right now. Last school year I worked on a project with my daughter. She was supposed to convert a milk carton to look like a character from a book she'd read. She chose the book about Puff the Magic Dragon. So, with some Depron and paper mache we converted the milk carton. Soon after she asked if we could make an indoor flying Puff, and reminded me that she was getting pretty good with her Vapor. I told her we probably could, but it would require some thinking to make it fly well and still look like Puff. Then one day when I came home from work she met me at the door with a model magazine that had come in the mail that day. On the cover was the "Mythical Beast" that a guy had built from fiberglass. It was powered with a jet turbine and could breathe flames when on the ground. She told me, "see, if they can make this dragon, then we can do an indoor Puff. "

So, we are doing Puff. She's been helping with some of the CAD. And, she and I have been doing the 3M77 spraying and lasering as we go along.

Here are some pictures so far. The first is a quick test 6-inch span from scrap foam to see if it looked about right proportion wise. The next pictures are of the full size fuselage, errr "body". The Body is about 22 inches from nose to tail. Body is my usual 6mm Depron, skeletonized and covered with RA Microlite. The tail surfaces will be a V-tail, and are 2mm Depron. Wing span will be about 17 inches.

Propulsion will be DD 7mm in the slot in his chest. If that turns out to not be powerful enough it will be replaced with a geared 7mm. Control will be Mini Vapor brick.

Very neat! I've seen the fiberglass 'dragon' in person and it's a true work of art!

Based on the title of your post though, I was expecting a C-47!

Gordon,

Is this a spinoff of the dragon-like plane that appeared at the German indoor championship a few years back? A Martin Mueller creation as I remember?

Nope. I've never seen Martin's dragon. This is the first I've heard of it. Do you have a link?

I love this plane! I hope someday, I will have the smarts and resources to make something like this.

Hope it flies great and your daughter likes it!

P.s. I can barely watch that video the camera is so shaky.

Gordon,

Glad indoor_fr found that, because I came up dry. I sorta-kinda remember now it was not at any German Championship, but rather one of the WallHalla extravaganza's, but no luck.

I found the Torino video amusing in that it took place in Turin, IT in 2009, but the "signoff" song was "Sweet Home Alabama" by Lynard Sknyrd!!!

Very cool Gordon. Definitely look forward to plans of this one!

A question about RA film. When I apply it to depron with 3M77, I don't get a very durable bond. It seems like the 77 droplets stick to the color coat just fine, but then the color coat tends to delaminate from the mylar???

Hi Gordon,

This should be another wonderful design! I remember you talking about it at NEAT. You should add some LED lights to the model to make it even better. Sergio has a new light set that he made up for me that should work great. It only weighs around 400mg with the small LED'S.

Nice information on the C-47. Ironically, I am working on a new DC-3 / C-47 project!

Joe.

Our School's mascot is the Dragon, so this is something I'll put on the build list.

May try an Anhedral V-tail to be more "dragonlike"

Hello Gordon!

My friend Uwe Steller told me about this thread.
I just add a video about my latest Dragon creation at our website. So I would like to let you know.
It's very different to your design. But maybe you like it anyway?

Good luck with your project. I look forward to see the first video
