The day looked like a typical Cactus day with similar speeds and numbers of pilots, and ofcourse, Astan tearing through the furball with his Windburner. Geez the ridge just looks made for ds. What a spot.

Thanks for the report Andrew! Huge effort to do that considering the travelling, flying, socialising and lack of sleep. Awesome pics. I really hope you guys can score it big on this trip. That Scorcher is a dead sexy ds plane.

Nice deal there Josh and Alex. Can't wait to see how far Alex can push that Scorcher and Josh with the K100. That is so cool to have another Kinetic in Australia!

Good deal both ways I think.
Has the heavy scorcher seen airtime in NZ? (pps Sorry I just realised thats the one that went 274. The light one "only" went 163 )

ps. I just found this thread yestreday.
Well done guys but also commiserations to AvB and Asto.
I knew that Scorcher was a sweet machine.

We are having a brilliant late afternoon's flight at Cass Ridge in light air, Getting to be a nice breeze now. Everybody is here and it's been a brilliant fun time. Heaps of furball in even with the Scratcho in there! Plenty of bangs and crunches. There were one or two intentional landings as well. Josh is just having a go flying the scorcher plank. It soared beautifully then stalled and spiralled into the scrub below but I think they can get it!

I edited up the video of yesterday and I think it's uploaded now this link should get you there. I'm using my phone so it's a bit hard to check.
(didn't work so will post later)

Yes I can't fix the video yet because the Internet is not working here right now. Problem was my laptop was going into sleep mode and switching off. What a top afternoon and evening we have had! It gets dark so late here we had to wait till after 10 PM to have the night flying Helicopter Demo! I'm going to bed! Reports tomorrow!

It’s now early Wednesday morning and I feel like I must be some sort of mental fruitcake because I couldn’t sleep for most of the night. I have no idea why … or what the deal is with needing to go for a leak 6 times. So at 7:30am I’ve resolved that sleep just isn’t gonna happen, so here I am. At least I don’t have a headache so I feel heaps better than yesterday!

Yesterday was a lay-about morning in the calm overcast conditions, then at 2pm after I’d edited the video I called Astan “hey you wanna pick me up so I can buy some lunch?” He punched Peter’s address into his GPS and he and Mick were here in no time. We took the DSX so I could work on a faulty flap servo, and decided to throw the rest of the planes into his car “just in case” and headed to a bakery. When I emerged with food, Asto was thinking there was enough breeze for a fly at Cass Ridge. “That’s what we’re here for!” I said, so up we went.

The 3 North Island guys (Gareth, Dave, Jono) were already lapping with foamies when we arrived. Bazza and Knut were soon there, then Alex, Josh and John. The wind was light but never too light. I flew the Scratcho heaps, looping round the spacious steep frontside, or DSing at about 50mph. We flew for hours. There was always someone DSing in the zone, and sometimes 5 or 6 guys furballing with regular thwacks from midairs and thumps into the ground. Late arvo, a foamie ricocheted out of a midair and hit me in the belly while I was DSing the Scratcho – it was a big thump and ruptured my spleen and I died on the scene, still trying to keep the Scratcho in the circuit. I made that last bit up to stop this story sounding boring, but it wasn’t boring at all on the hill … it was brilliant. Non stop action all afternoon.

Alex did a perfect handcatch with Bazza’s “Mini Slick” foam homebrew, someone crashed right into the middle of the road, Knut flew his light Banana and did a 100 point landing. Alex brought up a Cobra 3m F3B plane he just bought cheap, but it wasn’t quite enough to maiden it. The wind got better and better and towards the end the shear had got higher and we had a small cloud of planes swooshing around, at times with the Scratcho going around wider, or DSing a higher line. Josh flew the Scorcher plank and it looked great till it stalled and went in, but it was nice and close, and easily retrieved. Asto pointed to where he thought the Needle had gone in, and we reckon we should have an expedition to look for it … there’s a ridge above it that looks reasonably open, so we might get close. More flying, more laughs, more crashes. That poor little tree got really beaten up. It really was classic stuff and although we had to get to Andrew Palmer’s place for a barbeque, we hung around till just after 6pm. How often do we get days like that at home?

Back to the rental house, unpack/ repack and we were off for the 15 minute drive to Andrew’s place, just outside town. Andrew and Suetonia were extremely generous hosts, opening up their beautiful house and garden and putting on a delicious barbeque. The sight and smell of roast veges, salad, perfectly cooked steak and gourmet sausages was too much for some of us … I could have eaten the arse out of a low flying duck … so we ate heaps, and then she brought out the incredible pavlova and trifle. I ended up with abdominal pain for the second time that day.

The plan was to wait till dark when Andrew would give us a night flying heli demo. But at 8:45pm it still wasn’t dark! I had the previous day’s Tekapo video on a USB stick so we piled into Andrew’s home theatre room and watched the movie on a big projection screen! It was a hoot. Then Alex suggested some Weldon videos, so we watched the 2011 “Monster Day at Weldon” videos. I was shocked how bad the quality of those early videos was from my old Sony Handycam, but it was funny watching me and Asto on that first incredible trip to California … seeing Spencer flying the K100 to 451mph and losing aileron then landing it; Sean’s Deepend nearly getting 400, Asto upping his PB then destroying his D80 then getting 380mph on another one borrowed from John Buxton – such insane conditions and so much carnage, including my Opus.

At 10pm it was just dark enough. The North Island guys had headed home to pack but the rest of us went out to the shed. First was a ‘Spotlight” demo in the paddock (flying a tiny foamie electric while someone else tries to keep the spotlight on it) then Andrew prepped the helis and gave a beautiful scary awesome demo of acro with a big heli with amazing LED lighting all over it. Fantastic stuff. The he got out the chopper with the “Night Magic” blades which (this is unbelievable) show pictures in the rotor circle, and the pictures change and are different colours top and bottom.

Words can’t describe how great it is doing this stuff, and being with a bunch of guys who are having so much fun. It makes you feel good. I wish I could have a well paid job travelling around reporting like this! I got some good video yesterday and hope to sort it soon, but still having internet issues here.

Thanks Andrew couldn't said it better.
We're in DS central and everone is a bit sad due to having to go home tonight.
But we will be heading up to Cass ridge again soon for a last fly. Mick has packed his box up already and we will have to do some shopping for his kids before we go flying.
Last night was amazing. A massive feast, Shits and giggles watching movies and a incredible display of Andrews heli flying was great.

Gotta go now
