im gonna buy this for the HK 40-50 amp opto ESC's. im trying to figure out how it works.

Simple ... as you already are buying OPTO ESC - means you only have to connect the power IN leads to same as the ESC to battery ...

That is both +ve ESC and UBEC leads together and both -ve ESC and UBEC leads together to the respective pins of the battery plug you use.

You then plug in ESC to throttle channel and the UBEC Rx plug to any spare Rx socket ... as all + / - pins of Rx are common.

When you connect LiPo - you will now power the Rx via the UBEc and ESC will receive command for throttle ...

Simple.

The only difference if you want to use a UBEC with a BEC equipped ESC is that you would remove the RED +ve pin from the ESC Rx plug so that UBEC provides power alone.

Correct, the diagram is written for castle ESC's and the "disregard if using Pheonix HV controller" note covers that in the world of castle ESC's (Pheonix HV are OPTO).

Other than leaving the red wire the diagram is good.

Pretty explicit in Solentlife's post #3:

If you do not have a spare port on your receiver to the plug the BEC into, you can use a Y-connector between the BEC and any other servo or the throttle from the ESC as well.

Option #2 if no open Ports on RX:
Release the pin locks from the BEC rx plug & slip them into the two open slots on your opto ESC plug (if ESC has built in BEC remove & cap +/- leads, then replace them with leads from the stand alone BEC).
