DLE 55 or DLE 55 RA ?

Think I'm gonna get a Extreme Flight 88" Edge. Will be my first gasser. The RA has 1,000 more RPM's and rear exuast. The RA is $70 more. Will I notice a difference ? Do I need this extra RPM ? And would it sound different. I appreciate any input. I shoulda put this in Engines, sorry.

Both engines are great... Less chopping up your cowl with the ra... The ra will be a little louder. Either way...can't go wrong.

The RA comes with a pitts style muffler, so its a wash.

Get the RA

Reports have discussed the RA's muffler as loud and some tell of it's falling apart. Might be a consideration if you are at a noise sensitive field. The older 55 generates the same power at a lower rpm, allowing it to pull more pitch and generate less noise. I am a big fan of DLE engines so the comments are for information only, not any attempt to disparage.

Yeah. I ended up buying a buddies plane that already had the regular DLE55. I love it. I noticed that the RA style has a Pitts style muff but the piped don't extend far enough to exit the cowl. So making the person add extensions.

An extra 1,000 rpm's is nice. The RA will fit in a narrower cowl but it's going to be louder (problem if to loud at your field). These may be worth the extra money to you.
You may want to check the measurements of both engs from your firewall to the prop hub for best cg on your plane. Let us know what you decide.

1000 more rpm? Come on. Maybe 100-200 rpm increase.

The RA comes with silicone muffler down tube extensions. I have both engines and prefer the RA... Can't notice a differnence in power but I do like the RA better because there is a lot less cutting of the cowl.... Much cleaner look.

Can you tell us if there is an RPM increase with the RA and if so, how much?

When you guys talk about cutting off excessive cowl.. this only really pertains to if you don't use an after market wrap around Pitts muffler vs the sidemount correct? I have a few planes that I will be starting shortly that I will be installing the DLE motor on and really want to limit the amount of cowl hack... The rear mount is an added benefit right away as it eliminates the need for an aftermarket muffler...

DLE 55RA vs DLE55 mounting

I bought a used AW Pitts Python in which didn't come with a engine. The firewall has been drilled for a DLE55. I haven't decided which DLE to buy yet, but I did see on a site were it looks like the firewall bolt pattern is different between the rear exhaust and the side exhaust. Can someone comfirm this for me or is the difference enough to redrill the firewall without the holes beening so close together and weaking the firewall? thanks(new to gas n gaints)

Yes. There is a big difference in the bolt pattern for the RA. I'm building a Top Flight giant Corsair built for the regular 55. The RA is wider in all directions. Any one got the new bolt pattern by chance?

I have a BME 50cc that will swing 22x8 and 22x10 with little issues. The 22x8 is optimum. I am intalling the DLE55RA on a bird I am building right now planning on using 23x8. I think a 24x8 may be pushing it a little depending on your altitude, type of flying and other factors.
