my largest model! FA-18 epp 900mm pusher

last build for myself (for real this time) before i go back home, wanting to build something that starts to test my building skills in terms of inovation and efficient building.

have chosen to do one of my all time fav's, the FA-18.

the major thing for me to accomplish on this model will be a fully articulating elevator surface, such as the real hornet.

alternative add-ons to think about are flaps, airbrakes (rudder and panel brake) and maybe a clear plastic canopy..

also want to incorporate a removable wing as this will be a fairly large model to trying to haul it on a back pack along with 4 others models on my ride to the park would be interesting

ordering the parts and foam today and drawing up some plans.

predicted specs:

wingspan: 900mm
lenght: 1300mm
weight AUW: (predicted) 750-800g
motor: D2826-6 2200kv Outrunner Motor
esc:TURNIGY plush 40AMP
prop: 5x5 or 6x5 apc-e
servos: x6 9g's
battery: 1300mah - 3000mah 3s

more coming soon!

yeah it should be fine. i have used a 7x4 with this motor and it ran perfectly fine.

7x4 drew 30 ish amps at WOT
5x5 drew 17-18 amps at WOT

so a 6x5 would be in the 25amp range i would assume.. and you may find its better than the 7x4 becuase of the smaller diameter could give higher top rpms and therefore increased speed while keeping low end torque

so progress on the full moving horizontal tail section.

using 5mm alloy rod with a 2mm steel push rod as the arm, the alloy rod will go through the tail fuse and also into the elevator a fair way and the steel rod will have a nylon arm attached to the end which will attach to the elevator push rod to the servo.

so far it seems pretty sturdy and rigid.

here are some pics to show the idea of it all and its rrange of movement.

as u all can imagine im still waitin on parts, so more progress on what i can do while im waiting.. have the programing for the control surfaces done and dusted.

elevators operate independant of each other and have mixing with the ailerons as well ailerons have a single stage of flaps. initially i wont be installing flaps to try and save weight and also so i can learn the plane in the air.. maybe later on i might put a set in and mix a second stage of flap for super slow landings

here is the vid of the programing in action

order-

up elevator x2
down elevator x2
right aileron
left aileron
up elevator > left aileron
up elevator > right aileron
down elevator > left aileron
down elevator > right aileron
flaps down and back up..

fa-18 control surface programing (0 min 25 sec)

i used cf rod and tube, and drilled a servo horn to slide onto the cf rod then pinned the horn to the cf rod too. had a horn work loose on a previous f18 and lost it nose in. above set up is same on my 150% jetset f18 too. works a treat.

yeah i reckon there will be, thats why im using a seperate servos for each elevator, also the servo arms will be quite long and ill tune the servo throw limits to a lower maximum, the extended arm will increase the torque of the servo on the elevator surface, hopefully enough..

also the reason i went with alloy and steel can give up the weight for peace of mind..

I like the idea of seperate elevator servo`s , gives elevon and aileron mixing options. i ran linked elevon/ailerons on the su37, had max throws set up for some wicked moves
