I work in the manufacture sharpened diamond blades. 10 carbon atoms wide is about as sharp as anything. One problem faced with these sectioning blades is that the sectioned samples will exhibit compression or "chatter". The installation of a serration is the only way to allow the "cut" or slice to penetrate smoothly with a clear, no defect cut section of the material being machined. Otherwise fluid boundaries are introduced in a somewhat chaos free environment without set paths to control these harmonic artifacts.

So I say yes to the deviations provided they do not change the already existing design beyond safe limits.
