The thing that really stinks about a joggle gasket seam and a light layup is that the bonding resin can break the seal and run between the mold and the layup. The key is to paint the mold and have the paint go onto the flange about 1/4". You don't want to break this seal when prepping the flanges for bonding.

Hello!

I have been working on the fuselage plug in the last days, but I confess that the pace is not as good as I thought.

Anyway, the plug is almost done and I did two canopies of carbon fiber.

I wanted to use naked carbon.

After done, I applied some coats of poliester laquer, that is transparent.

I think that the result is quite good and the laquer added only 0,5g; The canopyīs weight is 5,0g. Fair enough!

Now I am thinking about the details before doing the main mold.

For example, should I use a big aileron and put the servos on the root of the wing or even inside the fuselage? Or is it better to make a smaller aileron near the tip of the wing and put the servo inside the wing?

Canopy fit

Hello folks!

Yesterday I did a little depression on the fuselage to make the fit for the canopy.

I tried a new technique (at least new for me) using the canopy as the mold. I fixed the canopy in the place with tape and drilled a hole on the top of it. The idea was to fill the canopy with poliester resin. After the cure, it demolded easily.

The exothermic reaction was strong and the tempture raised a lot, causing some cracks on the resin, but it was corrected. The next time will use less catalyst.

Although this little problem, I can say that it worked quite well and will do it again in a future project.

I painted with primmer and will sand it later.

The fit got very nice.

Hello!

The resin and the gelcoat used to make the mold are polyester.

I canīt tell about the viscosity, because I have always used the same products, but I think it is a medium viscosity.

On the lamination process I will use only epoxy.

Hello folks!

This weekend I hope to finish the plug and want to clarify one thing.

Do I need to make a down e right thrust for a pylon?

I have read some topics here and I think that 2 degress down and 0 degress right will be my choice.

Any advice on this subject?

Thanks!

Yes, i got it. I use polyester resin to make my molds with a viscosity of 400mPa.

what is the name of your epoxy resine?

thanks! kelvin.

The resin is Araldite LY-5052 and the hardner is Aradur 5052.

This is the data sheet of the resin: http://www.aerosol.co.il/files/artic...51066y66Ws.pdf

Plug painted

Hello folks!

This weekend was of a lot of work on the Vectus project.

I have never sanded so much, but I am glad to say that today I could finally paint the plug.

I used poliurethane paint. In others projects, I simply painted using primer, but I think that with paint the finish is better.

I am wainting the paint to dry. After that will start the polishing. Is the 2000 grit sandpaper ok?

Meanwhile, I started the steel skeleton of the mold. Made of 16mm tube in a square shape.

Maybe tomorrow it will be finished.

Hello!

Today I did the polishing of the plug.

I used dry sandpaper, grit 280, 400 and 600.

After sanded with water with 1500 and 2000 sandpaper.

Tomorrow will start to wax.

Notice that the plug has some stains on the painting. That is because I used two different tones of blue. It helps to show when it is time to stop sanding.

I also finished today the platform that will support the skeleton of the mold and the flanges.

Hope you enjoy!

r u going to ramp up clay or bondo to the wing leading edge since it does not look like your splitter plate is not level with the LE?

I have done that before- but the clay ramped up does not leave a very nice finish?
