Vectus Racer - All composite pylon build log

Hello everyone!

My name is Charles and I live in Brazil!

Since last march I have been working on my project, that I called Vectus Racer.

I have few experience with composites fabrication. I have done only 3 or 4 models using fiberglass.

The plug is almost done and in few weeks I will start making the molds.

My intention is to use carbon fiber, Kevlar and fiberglass on the layup process.

I hope to have some help here and also contribute somehow.

High resolution photos can be found on my Facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/vectusmodels

The construction of the plug is on this site: http://www.e-voo.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=129627

Cheers!

Thank you Tim.

Yes, it will be a single mold for the wing and fuselage.

I am not sure about the tail yeat. I will do the V shape in a separeted mold or it will be integrated with the fuselage mold.

Another doubt is about the live hinges. I have never done that. I don't know if it is a bood idea to make a groove on the place of hinges.

Cool.

But do the tail separate.. better for releasing .

Try Kevlar hinges.. Very easy. Just when you lay up , don't do any cloth on the inside of the kevlar.

This is how we do it..

cutting the Aileron's into a moulded wing. (22 min 40 sec)

Thanks Tim for the very instructive video!

I will follow it when do my first lay up.

As I work as a first officer in an airline company, a have few spare days and the construction pace is slow.

Today I worked on some refinements.

I will follow your advice and make a separate mold to the V-tail.

Soon we will have the mold.

I already did the canopy mold and a lay up test with carbon fiber and fiberglass. The carbon fiber is a little bit heavy, with 200g per square meter, but it was the only that I found here in Brazil.

English is not my first language, so please, correct me if I am writing something wrong.

Cheers!

Hello!

Today I have finished the tail.

Applied the primer and now it is time to cut the tail e make the mold.

I believe that it will be better this way, since that with a small mold, I can try different combinations of tissues during the layup.

Thanks Tim!

Now I am thinking about the tail linkage.

The tail is a bit small. Do you think it is a good idea to make a internal linkage to avoid drag?

Maybe if you can.
Check Sailplane set up for the best idea's.

IMO. I would cut off the fuse behind the tail... Then both control horn will be inside fuse cavity.
It will be push for up , but with a good carbon rods for linkages it will be fine.
And make a small mold for the end cap to go over them.

I will give it a try!

Today I took the courage and cut the tail.

I sanded with a 320, 1500 and 2000 grit sandpaper.

Tomorrow will apply the wax and begin the mold!

Hello!

In the last days, I have worked on the tail mold.

Today I cleaned the half of the mold and put gelcoat on the other half.

I hope to demould with no problems tomorrow.

I am recording everything on movie and if it gets right, on this weekend I will publish a movie!

Cheers!

Thank you guys for all the comments!

The tail mold has cured and it was easy to release the plug.

This weekend I will sand the mold and in a few days will do the first layup, I hope!
