I would not recomend shutting the TX off unless it is absolutely neccessary.
Hi,

It was definitely set to GPS and I did not shut off the TX at any point.

The problem is many of those mean something completely different to me.
For example:
RTF - rich text file, a document format.
ATF - automatic transmission fluid.
ESC - electronic stability control, more automotive stuff.

-Ferdinand-
RTF - Ready To Fly - usually includes a completed multi rotor with battery, transmitter and receiver. Power up and fly.
ATF - Almost To Fly - can mean some or all assembly required. Must add transmitter, battery, receiver, and build the multi rotor. Sometimes includes all electronics, motors and ESCs.
ESC - Electronic Speed Controller - see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Electronic_speed_control

Waited for lights, increased throttle only and started to go towards the neighbours house so had to increase it further to clear the fence and tried to steer it back. Was in HL mode so expected it to be relative to where I was. Started to go further away and let go of sticks as was in GPS mode but kept flying further. Tried to take control and bring it back but kept heading in one direction and then it appears to crash with no attempt to either return home or land itself when it would have been out of range.

Maybe I am just not experienced enough but either way I now have a broken Phantom
You should not fly in HL.
Thats only if you lose orientation and you should never take off in HL.
If you lose orientation you flip to HL and once you get close to see the orientation flip it off

Oh I thought you did because you posted this
"So much for return to home GPS !!"

I thought you shut the TX off and then it took off.

Glad you got it back.

Oh right, from what I had read in the manual it doesn't say anything like that, just that it kicks in automatically once you are more than 10m away.

Got a sweet crash video once it finishes uploading!

matty,

1) I thought you said it flew away .... (yes or no)
2) then you found it? (yes or no)
3) How far away did you find it? (approximate distance)
4) what was the LED color sequence before you took off.? (yellow, green, red)

Hi,

1) Yes, it was heading away from me when I was only increasing the throttle (to clear the tree line that it was heading towards).
2) Yes
3) 248 metres (using the google maps distance calc)
4) was green, yellow which I understood to indicate the HL mode.

Thanks

Some advices:
1. As a beginner, the first thing is to fly in a broad filed not around houses.
2. You have to get familiar with the system, read the instructions carefully.
3. Try to control the throtle, pitch and roll with the range of 5 meters. Never let it fly away. Pull down throtle and let it land slowly when you can't control it. You will only get some small damage, not fly away.

1)Did you tilt the pitch stick when you power on the transmitter or phantom?
3)the NAZA-M will enter go-home mode when the signal bad. 248m should be a good signal range.
I guess you pull down your throttle after phantom fly away, then phantom flied down and hit ground.

In my opinion, the HL mode was the reason that you lost control. Unless you have a full understanding of what the HL mode does, this will happen. It happened to me too , where I lost control of my Quad due to the HL mode. But once I totally understood the diff modes and uses, i'm enjoying my DJI since.

Matty, glad you got it back, even with some damages.. .
NEVER fly in HL unless you are in an emergency situation an even though be very careful because the GPS can always loose contact with one or more satellites, meaning you'll have to suddenly fly her manually which is not an easy task..
What happened to your GoPro?
Was it naked or protected?

Matty,

I would also look at using Course Lock and GPS until you get used to flying in different orientations. It will make it easier for you. DJI is correct, baby steps first, stay in a 5M box until you feel comfortable with the controls. Find a large field with no power lines around. When you get there recalibrate your compass. When in GPS if you loose orientation, let go of the sticks, it will hover in place. It is a lot of fun, but get to know the craft a little bit first.

Here is the crash.

Guess I am not cut out for flying these things. If I took off too slowly it just tips over and damages the props, if I give it more power, this happens and I lose control (still not sure why as I only gave it throttle to start with).

Are spares available yet? Will fix it then sell it on I think.

Crash :( (0 min 38 sec)
