Today we made 5 flights. The little Rascal (2,7m, Hacker A60-14L, 12S) has enough power, but the weight difference between glider 18,5kg and towing plane 8,5kg is not optimal.

I think it's going to be around $1,500.00

It's sold in Europe around $1,848.00

Which both turned out to be losers......best wait until someone actully brings one in and digs deep inside it to see how it's put together....the Phoenix K8 also had high praise on RCNetwork.de until they started to implode and it was discovered that the spars where made of crappy plywood and way to little crappy plywood at that........the interior of the fuse and the pictures of the tow release and hardware are identical to the K8 even though this is suppose to be a different company......Hmmmmmm. I already have one Vietnam built POS....not looking for another.

The Lanyu Grunau was structurally sound, the finishing details and covering sucked. After recovering, the plane flew very well. I sold it as my trailer required removing the tail feathers and struts, and re-rigging each time became a hassle. To my knowledge, the current owner is still flying it and is happy.

No doubt the Phoenix Ka-8s has a significant inner wing panel issue and we've read of a few wing failures. I'm certainly not making excuses. I'm as disappointed as everyone else. But with a few hours of basic rework as documented earlier in this thread, you can be flying with confidence.

At the end of the day, at least to my mind, it becomes a matter of price vs. value. You get a lot of sailplane for your money from China or Vietnam but the likelihood is you'll have to do some rework either for aesthetic or safety reasons.

If the same plane was available from Czech, you'd pay at least double and if it came from Germany, you'd pay at least triple and most likely more. And that's not counting freight.

I recently bought a wood kit from Germany that requires a lot of building and paid double the price of the completed Ka-8.

And even buying from either of these countries at much higher prices doesn't always guarantee perfection. Some of us are aware of an expensive German ARC that arrived with one wing that was totally unusable...didn't mate properly to the fuselage.

The sad thing about the Asian sourced stuff is that with a little more effort and proper QC, we'd be very happy with their products.

Oscar WIlde would be rolling in his grave.

Dare I also march out the old idiom about silk purses and sow's ears?

Oh, I did!
