Telemaster Senior laser wing construction
Hi folks
A friend and I have to rebuild a wing for his Telemaster Senior and I was just wondering if anyone had built a Telemaster Senior wing (or similar) using the 'Laser Method' where the wing ribs are cut from blue foam. I have have built conventional ribbed wings and veneered foam wings but not this hybrid method and I was thinking this would be a chance to try it. Any opinions on the suitability of this large wing etc would be appreciated. Billy. -- Remove 'NO-SPAMMERS' from e-mail address if replying personally |

I've never heard of this method. Can you give me a quick rundown on it or a
link to more info? Sorry I can't help. Re: Telemaster Senior laser wing construction
Well as, I remember it (bare with me here as it has been awhile since I
read about in a book by a guy called David Thomas I think - 'Radio Control Foam Modelling') you don't work over the plan but directly on the building board where you mark out the rib positions directly on the board and the cut nice true and square rectangular slices of blue foam with a hot wire at differing thicknesses depending on how far along the wing the rib is placed (Something like 1/2" at the root at about 1/4" at the tip). Tack glue the rectangular slices on the building board in the wing rib positions. Next use your two piece wing profile templates as you would to hot wire the top curving cut so all the glued ribbed are cut at the same time. You have a row of ribs with the top wing curve cut. Then use templates to cut the spar slots on the same way. Glue in the spars and add the LE and rib capping so you have a have finished wing (top half). When done place the templets for the bottom half of the wing in place and hot wire the bottom profile of the wing and turn over and do the same for the under side spars capping etc. as you did for the top. This is how I remember it but just broadly and I have forgotten the finer points. But the bonus was meant to be that it guaranteed a straight, warp free wing that was quicker to build than balsa, was the same as or lighter than balsa and stronger than balsa. It was meant to have been a method developed in the US for wings on models doing Aresti(?) style aerobatics (What ever they are!!). I am currently tracking down the book I mentioned above. But I was just wondering if the Telemaster Senior wing would be a good candidate for this method as I just want to give it a try really and to guarantee true, square wings is a bonus. Cheers, Billy. Re: Telemaster Senior laser wing construction
I have managed to find a copy of the the offending book. Would you
believe it, it was in the local library!! If anyone is interested I have made up a pdf file from scans of the relevant chapter (so I had something when I take the book back). Having read the book Phill, I think what you said is right - should work. The guy in the book mentions building 80" wings no problem and the Telemaster wing is only about 5" a half bigger. Think I'll give it a go. Billy scottsbilly(at)netscape.net -- Remove 'NO-SPAMMERS' from e-mail address if replying personally |

If the file is small enough to email, please zap me one.

Two flavors Phil. 2.1Mb and 1.3Mb can make you a smaller one if you
want? What flavor do you want ![]() Billy scottsbilly(at)netscape.net PCPhill wrote: > If the file is small enough to email, please zap me one. > > Thanks, > Phill -- Remove 'NO-SPAMMERS' from e-mail address if replying personally |

Re: Re: Telemaster Senior laser wing construction
I just finished CAD work on the senior telemaster wing. I preserved the exact airfoil section while lightening a bit and adding pass though for electrical conduit (soda straw). This is a nice way to route wires for servos and lights etc in the wings.
I'm also adding a strip of carbon fiber to the top and bottom spar. All and all, the updated wing will be lighter, stronger and a snap to build. Everything is interlocking so the wing will practically fall together. Here's a couple of photos for you. The other part is the motor mount for the brushless motors. 1/4 by 1/4 will make up the framing for the nacelles. (I'm going to make mine a twin with two large Jeti brushless motors. I have just finished completion of a laser cutting machine so if any of you are interested in a set of ribs let me know. Best, Lawrence Last edited by Tristar500; Feb 12, 2004 at 03:14 PM. |
