Why do so many people feel fpv planes should not be referred to as drones ? That's what they are, the media are hardly going to start calling them fpv planes nor are pilots of other types on aircraft

Because the word "drone" automatically carries with it, images of semi-autonomous vehicles
spying on and killing people. We really don't want FPV piloted aircraft attached to that
image. Maybe the media in AU isn't as hyped up about it, but drones are
in the local and national news several times a week now (and not just due to
idiots flying near airports). Yes, we'll probably never get away from the
word drone, but it's still really damn annoying, and I for one will continue to educate
people I meet who refer to my FPV aircraft as drones. Just today I was out flying in
the park, and met an elderly couple who were quite entertained by my plane and buddy's
quad. I showed em the view through my passenger goggles and they loved it.
One of them said "When we first saw it, we thought it was a drone" and I could hear
that fearful image in the tone of their voice.
After they understood what we were doing they saw a clear
separation from the word "drone", and I didn't even have to tell em I didn't like the word.

I took a stranger for a ride in my FPV plane a while ago who said "wow, it's just like a drone!" I spend the next five minutes explaining why it was exactly NOT like a drone as it has a whole other purpose. At least that particular punter now knows the difference...

On a recent AUVS-A conference, people were very concerned with the word "drone" and were pushing for the less scary/more explanatory term of "remotely piloted aircraft"... saying there will always be a human in the loop.

"Covert" is a very useful distinction. Military drones (in today's context of the word
which has evolved almost 180 degrees from where it started as bright orange painted
aircraft mean to be shot down) are meant to be covert. If their targets could
see them, they would avoid them or shoot em down. While I try to not be loud or
otherwise obnoxious with my FPV aircraft around other people and property, I don't
go out of my way to hide my activity either. I welcome strangers to observe my
activities up close and if possible, take a ride under the passenger goggles which
now happens almost every time I fly in any park. Nobody I've ever talked to, who's
ridden along, has expressed any fear of my aircraft.

Even when I notice someone through the flight camera, and can see that they react to
the aircraft, I may waggle the wings, or multi, circle once, and then fly away.
I acknowledge them acknowledging me but consciously try to avoid giving them
the impression that I'm there to watch them.

And again a piece of freedom lost thanks to incompetent and irresponsible media which put the hype over journalistic quality. Instead of getting paranoid about the appereance of your hobby, you should flood the media with letters - reader's/viewer's feedback - and/or just boycot the "bad" media. When their rates hit the floor, they will start thinking.
And don't trust in those big RC organisations to fix things. After all they are just another breed of politicians and as such more worried about their own butt than anything else.

What happened to them been rc planes or aircraft, like they were for so long, before "drone" became the new buzz word ?

EDIT: how timely http://mashable.com/2013/03/06/when-drone-become-drone/

An unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV), commonly known as a drone, is an aircraft without a human pilot on board. Its flight is controlled either autonomously by computers in the vehicle, or under the remote control of a pilot on the ground or in another vehicle.[1]

There are a wide variety of drone shapes, sizes, configurations, and characteristics. Historically, UAVs were simple remotely piloted aircraft, but autonomous control is increasingly being employed.[2]
