Hi All

Rex, (designed by our very own Safelandings) has always been my favourite Autogyro. Challenging to fly but rewarding to fly well, with lines that just look right.
It was Richs videos of Rex on Youtube that first caught my eye and got me hooked!!

So, having built two and got a couple of hundred flights out of them, I decided that ther next step would be a twice sized one.....nicknamed by my son as Rex-XL.
I kept the construction very similar but just doubled every dimension.

I'm very happy with the result, it weighs in at 6lb 2 oz . I did try it initially with two blades but had trouble getting them to spin up in calm conditions and ended up putting it in just after lift off which resulted in the LIPO exiting through the side of the fuz

Following some quick repairs over night and a suggestion from Rich to try it with some 32" Gemini 3 blades, I tried again today and its been a real success with three flights. Just got to build a canopy and find a pilot.

Cracking job mate, glad it all turned ok .....it is a floater that's for sure.

I can't believe it's AUW, that's around 3.5 oz foot!! let me know how the U joint holds out? I have lots to do but I have to say that has wetted my appetite! maybe my traditional xmas project has been decided?

I have a spare motor and esc sent to from a friend! I will have a look to what it's out put is.
Can you give some info on your set please?

Two of those hovering together would make a good clip !!

I got the loading to 4.5oz per foot. 31.5" diameter rotor and 98 oz model

The motor was this one straight out of the Gemini

prop is an APC 13x6.5

with a 60A tunigy esc

on a 3000 20c 4s

Flight time around 5 minutes 30 from fully charged to about 15% left.

I am sure it will go on the Gemini 2 blades.

I did think the rudder would be really twitchy considering its size but it really is a pussy cat regarding that, the only thing is its a bit sensitive in pitch. I moved the battery a bit further forward each time and its better....hang angle is now about 21 degrees....same as little Rex

That is fantastic, you must be really pleased. I was about to give up on my pusher because I kept breaking it, but now I've got it flying right I'm hooked on that style of autogyro. Might have to sell the Firefly to fund this one

I started on a plan 2-3 years ago but there was never any interest in it, so the prototype was built and a couple built them and that was that.
If I get time I am more than willing to draw up a biggie version , but I will have to liaise with Rich and see what he recommends as he goes through his flight tests.

Excellent news, I can't wait to get my hands on that. I thought the original Rex looked good, but this is what I've been waiting for.

I have to agree with Joe that is one big rudder but you know I think it is one of the things that make it a pussycat in the air. Were most of your turns done with the rudder? They looked nice and flat with no rolling and diving. I started a extra sized Spyro but it got shelved for something else.

Bill...the turns were all the usual comnbination of rudder/ roll /back stick and throttle, sometimes a bit of opposite roll to keep things flat.



Rich.....I have all the stencils that I drew up for the formers so you are welcome to these if you ever get round to building one or drawing one up, I will put together a bit of a list as to what I altered and parts that I used etc. That U/J was ideally suited.

If I'd known that I would have made it bigger.....I'm struggling to find something suitable for the cockpit

One can make the fuselage, the other the head.....I am half way through making 'MAN' sized blades
On left you will see a Fire Fly blade, the right a PCA-2 blade...Oak has been used along with ramin to create a very stiff and strong LE, balsa TE is hard 1/2". Its will be all experimental including the head which is being made up at the moment, not sure I am brave enough to hand test it in the normal 'safelandings' way


The reason for the big fin was no mistake, look carefully if you draw an arc from the nose and over the top, the fin matches this arc. Yes it looks over size but it wouldn't be REX without it and it is cracking for rudder turns
