I don't think such big boats will appeal to many people. 1/10 is already a good sized boat.
Right...

iBoat has proposed a large scale RC boat class and is looking for builders/ sailors who will start racing them in 2013... but has not said roughly where in the world he is.

Great place to be- used to spend time at Wrightsville Beach...

Good luck with the TP52! My leanings are more 'old school'- CCA/IOR- 1/12 scale is pretty much my max. depending on subject.

I actually live in wrightsville beach.

The drawings are complete for the 52. Total length is 70". 62.4" plus 8" sprit.

Boats will compete on the 1/10 scale of the TP52 class rule as of 2013, and will follow the TP class rule moving forward.

We'll post rules and a web site in the coming days that will clarify the TP rule and how it applies to the RC version of the boat.

I've worked out hull/deck kit cost.

I will offer hull and deck kits (hull and deck only needing to be glued together and trimmed) for $300.

Keel and bulb will cost $90

Rudder $45

Carbon Rig kit will be $150

Sails $150

We are working out plans for fittings. We are looking to have the first hull complete in the next four weeks.

Chris -
are you intending to be a one-design class (I.E. same hulls, sails, etc.) or a box rule (LOA, Draft, Weight, SA) or an open development with only length, draft and sail area?

I would assume it can't be a one design if you are looking to incorporate the X52 guys into the class, or the general hull templates will need to be made public. Based on the current economy and loss of "major" manufacturers, I would be pretty hesitant if I have to count on a builder to maintain a class as limited in builders/owners as this one will be.

Just an opinion - I could be wrong. Cheers, Dick

It would be two fold.

I'm happy to provide a hull file for home builders.
I'm happy to provide a hull, ready to be assembled... (hull and deck, needing to be joined and trimmed)
I welcome other hulls built to the TP52 Class rules. (modified for RC but essentially the same box and scaled weights/dimensions)
There's no one design, no formula. It's a box rule, and sails must measure in to a master template. The rule allows for pretty similar boats as there is a box inside the box with the class, meaning, your boat has to measure in bigger than this box, but smaller than the other box. Thus, you won't have an issue of excessively narrow boats... or a tradeoff in rig vs displacement so there won't be "light air boats" and "heavy air boats".

The reynolds numbers that the RC boats in this size operate at are small enough that the small deviations (that would be medium sized deviations on the real boats) keeps the competition even tighter.

From looking at the x52 guys, their sail area looks smaller and keels look longer than what would be allowed in a TP52.

based on the current economy, I'm happy to offer up the plans for free. We did something similar with the i550 when that was developed. Plans were $75, and hull kits $2000. We have sold 500 sets of plans and at least 12 plans sets in the last few years. Number of boats completed is in the 50's. Since this is RC, I'd be happy to underwrite my time on the plans, with those that buy carbon/glass hulls.

I guess... if that's a good thing... if it's a bad thing, I'm a different one.

LOL! No! I admire greatly what has been done with the i550! I've probably spent too much time over the years on SA reading the thread!

I was just "slow" with the "iBoat" connection!

Great stuff!

Plans available

hull plans are now available for the TP52 model.

These plans are scaled down from an actual sized TP52 of the 2012 era conforming to the current 2013 Class rules. The class we are forming will be based on this generation of boat and eveolve along side it's real world counterparts.

tp52model.blogspot.com for more info. We'll upload files in the coming days.

Price - Free for download.

Rig, keel, rudder plans coming soon...

Happy building.

Hi Chris -

may want to delete (or change) the reference to "Seawater" for measurements. Central parts of the USA are well away from seawater. If you feel it is necessary to measure while floating, I recommend changing "sea water" to "fresh water" with appropriate changes since fresh water is available virtually everywhere. As an example - from Minnesota to Texas involves a one day drive. Meanwhile, I can virtually "walk" to the Mississippi River to float in freshwater.

Just something that popped out when I read the blog.

Cheers, Dick

Urgent update!

The files uploaded to the tp52 model site were incorrect. Th adobe conversion process incorrectly scaled the files slightly larger.

An update will be reported within the hour. Please redownload the new files if you plan to build. Sorry for the inconvenience
