i cant get it up!

SO.....This is a post that I wanted to write in hopes the i will get tons of "pats on the back" , I started with the Hobby Zone Champ, which if you know the plane you know its a great starter plane. Maybe too great! i jumped right into a 182 skytrainer, from BH. (4ch), It took me 3 failed take offs before i relized that the elivator ch was backwards. when i gave it "up elv", ( down on the stick ) it nosed over and snaped the prop right off. the 3rd time it went into the grass from the runway and snaped the front landing gear before snaping the prop again. I glued it back and made a new rod with a hanger wire, switched the elv on my remote but by now im so gun shy that im having trouble commiting to take off. 4th try and it swerves to the left and into the grass. no damage. 5th time it swerves again this time it rolls into a curb and there goes the prop again! back home to glue it back together. tons of play in the front landing gear. closer inspection and the screws are all loose on the landing gear so i tighten all of that and the play seems to have gotten better. at this point im thinking ive learned a lot of valuable lessions about what to look for on a new model. so this am i decided to check the new gear and see if the run ups have improved at all. They did but the hanger wire rod just isnt strong enough and bends a little on every run up. on the last run up it got air born and before i new what happend i paniced and she took a small dive into the run way. lucky enough the front gear bent instead of snapping and it slid out on the side of the wheel cowl instead of my new plane. of course the prop snapped. anyway, i have new props on order, i went ahead and ordered 4. just incase. but i think im done trying to fly until they get here. Im just realy bumbed out about the whole thing. I geuss my only question to you guys at this point is , Does this sound like normal learnning to you or should i just stick to video games? any tips or comments or stories of your learning experiences will be most appricated. thanks for any kind words and help.

Without the help of an experienced pilot you are pretty much on par. Don't let it get you down, it will pass.

I consider myself experienced in both building and flying. Just yesterday after finishing a new scratch build I maidened a plane that had the elevator servo reversed. I had even checked all control surfaces 3 times prior to launch, and I didn't notice the elevator reversed. The results of the flight were that I now get to rebuild the entire airframe.

Your in the right place to get good info but a real person to help you will avoid a lot of begginer mistakes. I hope i misunderstood you when I got the idea you were gluing broken props back together. This is a very dangerous thing to do and can lead to serious injury.

you didnt mis understand and i was worried about that, but i seen another builder who had done this and it worked fine BUT, he had a really small mini plane.
i did test them with no one in the room and my safty glasses on if that makes you feel any better. NOTE i wont be doing this any more per your concern. I take safty very serious and this was just me and my impatince. lession learned thankfully with no injuries. thanks for the warnning and your help.

I started flying with a Nine Eagles 400mm P47, and all I gotta say is thank God it was made of foam, and easy to repair, because that poor little plane has been to Hell and back teaching me how to fly, but it still flies, flies pretty good in fact, but I did the same thing you did, felt I was ready to step up, and got another P47, this time and FMS 750mm, and it's a whole 'nother monster, can't fly it without the help of a stabilizer (Detrum GY48V for ailerons), just got the Orange 3 Axis Stabilizer, have yet to try it in a successful flight, didn't have it set up correctly the first time, but anyway, with the gyro in there it flies beautiful-like. Stick with it, you'll get it, and hopefully it won't get too expensive for you...

one thing i've learned is with tricycle geared planes they are going to pull one way or the other no matter how much adjusting you do! my apprentice pulls to the left. i've adjusted the clevis a hundred times. it'll pull to the left, a half turn of the clevis and it pulls to the right!

what i did was take the wing off, and taxi the plane around. this way it won't try and fly, i can drive it around like a car. it helped me get the feel of adding rudder inputs to make it taxi straight at slow and high speeds. once i got the "feel" of how the plane reacted on the ground, i installed the wing and taxi'd around at low speeds.

remember tho, whichever way the plane pulls when your taxing for takeoff, it'll pull the same way when you land.

i may be kinda geeky when it comes to preflight inspections and all, but i do them like i was going to be flying IN the plane. i check all control surfaces, check the gear, check everything that could come loose, check all the clevis's.

hang in there, it'll all "click" and everything will be golden.

when i first got my dynam sbach 342,brand new and all shiny ! took off down a road, pulled down for lift off and boom ! Nose down prop and landing gear broke.servo reversed,how did i do that !? i checked it before take off ! so then new prop and a hand launch,it flew ok,third flight, take off from road again,swerved to left right at a mail box post jerked it up and to the right STALL boom ! broke nose and motor off,aileron broke off,landing gear ect. all glued together, and flys good,a man jumps from a tame glider to a touchy taildragger he is going to have be prepared to cry a few times Just check EVERYTHING pre flight, screws,controls,servos(no chattering) motor mount(not loose) prop on tight,wings tight and straight.and try a few hand launches to get the feel of it flying

Sounds like me and my Decathalon. It's now looking like something from a demoltion Derby, I've repaired it that many times...

I'm now awaiting a smaller J3 trainer from HK, but meantime I've motorised an old West Wings Orion 59" glider which has been gathering 10 years of dust in the loft. There was an 'E' version sold so it should be OK. If I do alright, I'll try adding aelerons as well.

I figured I can't do too much damage with that!

Been there and done that, solodare

Here's my embarrassing story that I have not dared to anybody before
I have been a aircraft geek since youth and thought I knew everything about them. Got into helis first, and were able to fly them reasonable well in a years time (450 scale bodied in the end). Then I was "tricked" in to airplanes by my nephew who is a part owner in the LHS.

Quite confident that this would be a easy transition, my first plane was a UM T-28 - a guy like me should go straight for 4ch, I could fly (helis) for Pete's sake Bound it to my DX6 that I used on my helis, went out to fly, and guess how that went. Straight into the ground at first attempt! Well, I glued it back together, managed a bit longer flight and smashed into the ground. Now I was so depressed that the T-28 was glued back together and placed on the shelf. Some weeks later I decided that I SHOULD learn to fly, so I bought a HobbyZone SuperCub, bound it to my DX6, went out to fly and guess how THAT went Well, you guessed it - Just like the last time... SuperCub glued back together and placed on the shelf, I even more depressed!

After a few more weeks, I was DETERMINED that I should learn to fly (Stubborn, me? No, just dedicated ), so I joined this forum, read up on everything mentioned regarding beginner planes and bought a HZ Champ, bound it to my DX6 and went out to fly. Guess how that went After take off, the Champ nosed up, so I decided to give it a little bit down elevator (stick forward), and ended up in a loop. Staring at the undamaged Champ, I suddenly realized it - the elevator was reversed!!! And the embarrassing thing, it was I who had done it. In a total brain lapse, I had completely misunderstood elevator movement - I had intentionally set the elevator to move down with forward stick - on the T-28, on the SuperCub and on the Champ - checked it before flight, and believed that this was how it should be!!! Me, a die hard airplane buff!!! You cannot imagine how stupid I felt!!!

Well, to cut it short, after this realization (that I did/do not know everything about airplanes) I've had much greater progress in learning how to fly

Since then I have always taken time to analyze every crash (yes, it has been a few ) to understand what happened, seek out sources to understand why, and learn to what it takes to avoid it happening again. I'm quite sure that this has helped me to progress a lot (that and all the air time I've managed to squeeze in over a relatively short period of time).

I who have always enjoyed late evenings and been hard to get out of bed in the morning, are now getting to bed early(ish ) so that I can squeeze in an hour of flight before going to work - this is an addictive hobby for sure! And for the first time in 30 years, I have skipped my usual Sunday motor cycle ride due to no wind, I rather go flying Did I say addictive?

Stay in there, no video game is this much fun. You'll get the hang of it - if I could, you can - thrust me!

Thanks everyone for those great stories and tips! I feel so much better about my skill level.
I think im going to hand launch next week sometime,(as soon as my parts come in)
proly should have done that from the first. BUT with the elev in the wrong direction that would have been worse. So it seems things have a way of working out.

ordered them on the 20th and they got here today.
