Mini-HowTo
Head tracker for Optic 6 and other radios.

You will need a ppm signal mixer sold at hobbyking and a radio that can supply...
-PPM out
-PPM in
-ground
-power

Then use a rubber band to hold trainer switch. Make sure you power up head tracker and Tx, BEFORE powering rx. If your receiver has a failsafe, set it.

I just wanted to confirm for any other folks out there that I got this working on a Hitec Laser 6 a few days ago.

My setup:

- Hitec Laser 6
- Fatshark Predator goggles
- Corona Synthesized Dual-Conv Receiver 9Ch 72Mhz
- PPM signal mixer from hobbypartz: http://www.hobbypartz.com/88e-fb12-ppm-mixer.html

... and a bunch of work to get all the signals in the right ports. I'm powering the PPM signal mixer externally (split from the goggle power source).

Would this also work on an Aurora 9?

Negative, but is in the new Aurora 9X due end June 2013.

Aurora 9 has two trainer mode settings:
a). All channels are processed from the Master transmitter
(Slave / buddy transmitter must be programmed with same mixes as the Master Tx)
this being the most secure of all Trainer operation methods.
b). Channels 1 to 4 (aileron, elevator, throttle, rudder) can be mixed from A9 and the Student transmitter,
but known FPV require at least six (Heli seven) channels mixed as in (b).
1, 2, 3 & 4 can be used to control Head Tracker but the others can not be used.
1 = pan
2 = tilt
3 = thro
4 = pit
5 = ail
6 = elev
7 = rudd

As an aside ChainLink UHF Long Range System can be used with an A9:

Thanks, so adding a LRS system would also be an option.

Would it also be possible to hack the aurora and add something like this?http://www.rcgroups.com/forums/showt...1278835&page=8

Or replace one of the switches with plug for a DIY headtracker?

Bas

Regret we are unable to assist in this instance.

Manufacturers are happy to help resolve matters relating solely to their own products and accessories.
After market accessories must be referred to the individual manufacturer as under:
. After Market Accessories extract
"Hitec RCD cannot assure compatibility with non-Hitec equipment.
There's just too much of it out there for them to be able to test.
It's also not their responsibility to insure such compatibility.
The maker of the non-Hitec equipment must make sure their items are compatible
- if they are making such a claim.
Many times, non Hitec equipment is used with Hitec equipment even when no claims of compatibility
are made by the maker of the non Hitec equipment, yet the modeler expects universal compatibility."
.. A typical corresponding posts from other brand distributors:
Interference - Ignition Noise
"Many electronic companies who make electronic accessories do not test their equipment's RF output
to see if they meet FCC standards and/or if they create excessive RF in any of the active RC Frequencies
world wide. 27, 35, 36, 40, 41, 72, and now 900 and 2.4."
- Mike Greenshields - Product Manager Airtronics - Global Hobby Distributors
"Futaba cannot assure that non-Futaba equipment
is fully-compatible with other items of Futaba equipment.- Bax "

Having trouble with Optic 6

Having issues getting my head tracker working. Using a Hitec Optic 6 Tx and an Orange DMS2 8ch Rx. as well as the following parts;

Hobby King PPM mixer
http://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/s...dproduct=11848

xgy-1000 head track gyro
http://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/s...dproduct=10994

FPV Pan and Tilt mount
http://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/s...dproduct=12875

Head tracker is plugged into the trainer port with the cables that came with it. I am using channel 7 and 8 on the receiver and I hold the trainer switch. When I first tried this setup it all seemed to work except if the cables moved. Then it would cut out. If the cables didn't move it worked fine. The red light on the mixer wont always stay solid. If i move it around, the light flashes and it stops working. I used a continuity tester and all the wires seem to work fine. Maybe a bad PPM mixer?

With the trainer switch pulled, none of the other Tx controls work. For instance if I have other servos hooked up for elevator and aileron they stop working if the trainer switch is pulled.

So I need some help please.
1) how can I use channel 7and 8 with the trainer switch and still control the other servos for the air craft?
2) Why would the PPM mixer cut out?

Check out the video. This is the behavior I am getting now. Whats up with that?
Thanks

1. Optic 6 is a six channel Tx thus channels 7 & 8 not available.
2. Head Tracker Units were not available when the Optic 6 was designed.
3. Hitec RCD is very happy to support all Hitec manufactured products, but please refer to:
. After Market Accessories - Leads, Modules & Switches
extract:
"Hitec RCD cannot assure compatibility with non-Hitec equipment.
There's just too much of it out there for them to be able to test.

(Same answer as advised by other major RC System brands e.g. Futaba)

Thanks Alan.
However it looks as if mecevans and another guy were successful.

Independent of a possible channel 7 and 8, do you know if ch1-6 are supposed to work while the trainer toggle switch is held on?

Whilst the Trainer Switch is held "On", the Optic 6, like all similar transmitters, acts as a "pass though" for data
from the student transmitter.
i.e. The stick input and mixes from the slave Tx are passed through the Instructor's Tx direct to the rf output.
When Trainer Switch is released, the data stream from slave tx is stopped and data stream from instructors
own stick & mixes is re-connected to the rf output stage.
. Optic 6 Trainer Cord - Post #2 and #6 may assist.
