Free Flight to RC Flight Kitbash Contest >> Starts 17 Nov

What is a Free Flight to RC Flight Kitbash Contest?

To celebrate RCG's approval of its very first forum dedicated solely to building balsa model airplanes we have decided to have a contest. After some deliberation and a lot of thought we have decided for this contest (in hopes of more in the future) we will be kitbashing a free flight model and turn it into an RC model.

We will be starting the contest on 17 Nov and finishing up on 31 Jan. All builds must be finished by 31 Jan. to be qualified for judging. You can start earlier if you wish.

Requirements

The requirement is pretty simple. Take a model airplane, from either a kit or plans, and kitbash it into a model airplane that flies and is controlled by a radio. The power source is totally up to you as well as the size. Choose whatever you like to build and want to fly as long as it was never designed for RC.

Judging Criteria

We are still hashing out the judging criteria, but I think it will fall into these three categories:

1. Best Kitbash
2. Best Build Thread
3. Best Overall Looking

We think that is simple and easy enough to judge and will keep this fun and exciting. The top three winners will be awarded prizes.

Prizes

1. PETERRAKE has generously offered to donate these beautiful one of a kind drawings of the following airplanes:

Albatros DIII
Nieuport 11
Fokker EIII
Fiat CR42
Wildcat
Siemens Schuckert DIII
Sopwith Camel
Fokker Dr 1
Sopwith Triplane
Rumpler CIV
DH2
SE5a
Bristol Scout

The first place winner will have the first choice. A sample of this fine artwork is attached below.

2. "Mr. X" has contacted me and offered another prize as well. From what I understand, this will be an pretty awesome prize and those which will be awarded to winners of the above criteria. See this post here of photos and prize info: http://www.rcgroups.com/forums/showp...&postcount=108

With those prizes available, I'd enter just to get a chance at those. Thanks you both for stepping up and making this contest even better.

If you would like to participate, please post in this thread and I will add your name to the list below.

If you have any questions please feel free to ask.

Thanks,

Frank

When starting your thread for the contest, please title your contest thread using the below format.

"Your Plane Name Goes Here" #XX Free Flight to RC Flight Kitbash Contest >> Your Username goes here<<

But of course use your own build number where the "XX" is.

And please link this thread in your post #1. Here is the URL http://www.rcgroups.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1755366

If those are free flight models kitbashed to RC models then yes, just like those. That's what we are planning for our first contest.

The guys I would consider the top builders on RCG probably aren't interested in this contest.

I'm in, just have to figure out which plane to do. I don't want to double-dip with the Sparky.

Gotcha Andy and thanks for joining in the fun. And oh yea, you gotta throw some hyperbole in when you get the chance. Right? It allows people to talk smack.

PS What does "sponsor" mean under your name?

I don't know if this is of any interest as a prize (and I use the term loosely), but I'm happy to send the winner 3 ready to frameA4 size prints along the lines of this one. There are about a dozen to choose from, mostly WW1 types, but with a couple of oddball WW2 types thrown in for balance.
If you think the winner might like them I'll post the full list for him to take his pick. There's no copyright issue simply because I drew them, so already hold the copyright.

I don't really consider what I do as art, more an extension of plan drawing. It actually started out with drawing the graphics for printed foam indoor models, and then I thought they might make nice decorations for the dining room wall. The Nieuport and Dr 1 were actually built and flown using Plantraco 2 channel radio and Durabatics foam. There, that's got me banned from this forum already, I mentioned that other F word.

I look forward to watching you guys build your models. I have a few rubber size models to build myself, but they were designed for radio from the outset.

I've often thought about converting one of the rubber powered kits to R/C. I can't spend a bunch of money on a lightweight "brick" system though. I'd have to go old school. I have a couple of Medusa 12mm brushless inrunners and a bunch of HS-45 servos. That's the lightest stuff I have. I'll have to do some research and see if I can make that work in something. If so I'll jump in with a general aviation craft. I'm really not into warbirds and nostalgia types.

Dammit Frank! This is all your fault. I need another airplane like yet another hole in my head. It didn't take much research to find this is very doable. I quickly decided on the Herr V-Tail Bonanza. I went to ebay and stumbled on a NIB kit for $25.00 shipped! It should be here Wednesday or Thursday. Guess I'd better get busy and finish up my Eaglet 50 conversion to make room on the bench....

Put me down for the Herr Engineering Kit#HRR108 V-Tail Bonanza
