So, based on my experience, how difficult will I find it to fly? Remember, my only quad experience is an AR.Drone 2.0 (with a transmitter/receiver mod) and Walkera's MX400. What kind of learning curve should I expect?
With this fragile frame, I would hover over grass / Tall Grass for a bit. The Tricopter has good yaw authority so make sure you set up a couple different dual rate and expo switches on your transmitter. The learning curve is steep if you still have orientation glitches. If you're confident of your flight skill it may be easier for you.
This frame will break and be difficult to fix cleanly. I'd recommend taking all the gear you have and building a RC Explorer tri first and crashing that. I flew a few dual rotor helis and planes for 2-3 years before I got into multis.
Here's flight #2 or #3 out in the open and it goes wrong quickly.
Specifically look at the end for the pile of broken arms I've collected learning to fly.

The KK2.0 is not capable of either, or altitude hold, carefree, rth, etc. It already runs very close to the limit of what it is capable of.
The wii stuff is getting cloe now at realistic prices as is timecop's naze32 board.

Anyone here actually have this thing up and flying? What motors and ESC's do you run? I would love to fly one but only wish the Naza I already have could handle a Tri..... Anyone done it as a Y6?

I notice you have the tricopter up for sale now???
Why sell? If you want gps position hold and all that junk, there are many "upgrade" flight board option that will drop straight into this tricopter.

I would say just fly the thing as is. GPS etc is a nice novelty, but seriously, do you want to watch your tricopter fly, or actively participate and actually fly the thing???

This thing flies great!! I find the tricopter layout feels much more natural to me than a quadcopter, coming from a fixed wing background.
I have the hobbyking SK 2830 1020kV motors swinging 10x4.7 propellers on 3 cells. Works great.
I don't believe naza will do a tricopter, but there are many other flight controllers that will.
A Y6 would be possible (maybe), but an additional undercarriage would be neededto keep the bottom blades off the ground.

We'll see what happens. Not looking like it will sell, as I've had no offers. If it sells, GREAT, if not, I'll keep it in the air and look for an upgraded board with GPS Hold and all that.

Modifying the Y-3 tail section

I just bought a Y-3 fuselage at Hobbyking. Should be here between tomorrow and sometime next month.... I found many successful Y-3 flyers on Youtube, so I'm confident this is going to be a fun project The only thing I don't like is that the tail section looks like unfinished business. Has anyone tried to modify it, like adding a nozzle, stabilizers, ....? Would appreciate pictures or suggestions!!

Here's mine, just put it together, all parts from Hk, only tested indoors as weather is crap, seems to fly nice, although escs get fairly hot, being enclosed I expected that.

I'm using, kk2 fc, 3 cell 3000mah battery, 25 amp turnigy plush escs, turnigy aerodrive sk3 2826 980kv motors, 1045 props.

The motors are quite small but hk recommended them, initial test flights indoors they seem ok, need to give it a blast outside

I would think a 10x4.5 prop is the limit on the 2826 980KV. Have you run a watt meter on this. The motor is rated at 10A max and my tris have hovered around 7-8 amps per motor with 3-4S capable setup on 3S 2200mAh batteries and 30amp ESC with 9x5x3 or 9x4.7 or 10x4.7 props. Hate to see you back on here with an ESC shutdown due to load or a motor frying, and a broken front arm.

Requires:
28-XX brushless outrunner motor x 3
25~40A brushless ESC x 3
High speed micro servo for the tail x 1
8x4~10x4.7 propeller x 3 (2 standard/1 reverse rotation)
Multi-rotor control board
2200mAh 3S lipoly battery
4CH transmitter and receiver

These were the requirements from HK website; and 8" to 10" prop with 25-40A ESC, so, 10" prop with 25A esc seems to not balance out the work load. 28-XX could be a 28-30/36 but the pots may limit the height of the can.
Just a thought.

Are you driving your yaw servo and the board from the esc that is getting warm ?? I did this .. swapped to a UBec and now esc temperatures are all even and cool.
I see you are using a kk2. Should be able to power the board from one esc but servo load will be best handled with a UBec.

Thanks for info, don't have a watt meter, I thought the 25 amp escs would be more than capable for that motor, I have some 8045 props and 2200 mah bat, would u recommend switching to those props? hk suggested 18 amp escs so I went for 25 to be on the safe side, I thought the esc should'nt be pushed too hard as the motor is rated at 10amps, are the motors pulling too much because of the props?
